I do not contradict, because the two, afflictions and birth, do not arise again, but are merely expressed by the term "third truth." Furthermore, if nirvana were a real entity, it would have to depend on a skandha or a person, which is also unreasonable. As the Blessed One said, "Whatever suffering is completely abandoned, eliminated, exhausted, free from attachment, ceased, pacified, extinguished, and suffering is neither connected nor received, this is peace, this is excellent, like this: abandoning the continuum of skandhas, craving is exhausted, free from attachment, cessation is nirvana." From this sutra, in the state of nirvana, the skandhas do not exist, and the person who is designated based on them does not exist either. If it did exist, it would contradict the sutra, and nirvana would not be liberation from samsara. Therefore, in whatever basis afflictions and birth are exhausted and become nirvana, where no skandha or person is seen, what nirvana dependent on that could exist? Therefore, nirvana is not permanent. Secondly, of the two refutations of substantiality and selflessness, the first is: The Samkhyas say, "According to us, nirvana does not have a basis, so there is no fault of non-liberation, because from knowing the difference between qualities and the person, the order of arising of the great and so on, from the cessation of all kinds of changes, in the state of liberation, the person remains in the nature of having consciousness, so there is a self of liberation." If you say so, your assertion that the self of liberation has consciousness is meaningless, because consciousness is to enjoy an object, and at the time of liberation there is no object at all. Just as when a person wants to enjoy an object, he produces all the collections of transformations that are the object of enjoyment of nature, and then the person knows and enjoys the meaning that is grasped by thought. When a person knows the difference between nature and qualities, and thus the person is free from craving for objects and becomes liberated, what is the use of establishing that the person enjoys objects at that time? The object of enjoyment, all the collections of transformations, the nature of cause and effect completely.

Because it has approached quiescence. If someone asks: Then, in this case, does it depend on a sentient being? Answer: Assuming the existence of a non-sentient being is equally unclear, just as fire and heat are inseparable, so too are a person and awareness. If someone says: Even in the state of liberation, awareness itself does not exist, but because its potential exists, therefore the self exists. Answer: If there is a self that is the basis of liberation, then the seed of awareness that depends on it should also exist. In that case, since there is no existence of awareness, the self that is inseparable from it also does not exist, so the potential of awareness that depends on it cannot exist either. If someone says: If there is no self in liberation, then there is no liberation, therefore this existence will not be destroyed, which will lead to many undesirable results. Answer: If, when awareness exists, there is an entry into liberation and its potential, then is the entry into existence that depends on it existent or non-existent? If someone has doubts about this, then if the basis of liberation—awareness and its potential—do not exist, then the idea of entering or not entering the existence that depends on it is also unreasonable. For example, if a seed is burned, then the continuation of sprouts and so on that depend on it will not occur, similarly, in any case, the continuation of the self will not occur, therefore liberation can be attained. Because that is the case, the contaminated aggregates of clinging cease entirely in a way that they do not arise, therefore for those who are liberated from suffering and attain Nirvana, in the state of Nirvana, it should be said that "in all ways, the cessation of the self is the best," because there is no liberated self. Because at that time the aggregates cease entirely, so the self that is imputed in dependence on it does not exist, and it does not depend on the aggregates, but arises from elsewhere, that is, the causeless, permanent self cannot exist, therefore it can be determined through reason. Like this, if there is a permanent self at the time of liberation, then since there is no difference from before, samsara will not cease. If there is a difference, then since it will change, it will be impermanent. Second part, divided into refuting arguments and giving answers, first is refuting arguments: If someone says that in the state of liberation, there is neither a liberated self, and Nirvana, which is called the ultimate truth, is only the cessation of all suffering because conditioned phenomena no longer arise, then what is the point of pursuing such an ultimate truth?
