Because it is of the nature to follow and change according to the presence or absence of other conditions. Since it is so, if time is permanent, then the result should also be permanent. Because it is a result, it will become impermanent like a vase, etc. Furthermore, if those who speak of time admit that time is the cause of the movement of things, then in effect they also admit the result. For example, in order to produce a result, it is determined that "this is the cause of this." If the result is not seen, then for the cause of seeds, etc., there is no term of "cause." Therefore, the determination of a thing as a cause depends on the result, so all causes will necessarily become the result itself. Even if it is a result, it will not be permanent like sprouts, etc. If time becomes the cause of various movements, then time must abandon the state of not acting on the result before, and transform into a state of benefiting the result. In the world, we see that when causes such as seeds change from their previous state, they become the cause of other results such as sprouts. Those that do not change will not become the cause of other things. Whatever has a change different from before cannot be called permanent, therefore time should not be permanent. If it is admitted that time does not change, then the object of the result produced by the unchanging, permanent time as the cause is born from non-cause, that is, it will become independent of cause and arise. For example, various results are impermanent, and time is permanent, so it will become a different entity. Whatever is a different entity will also become mutually non-touching and arising simultaneously, like a cow and a horse. Therefore, if the result itself arises without relying on the cause, then the statement that time is the cause becomes absurd, because it does not perform any causal function. Apart from this, time cannot be the cause, for example, how can the result produced from the cause, the permanent time, become impermanent? Because in the world, it has never been seen that the cause and the result are one permanent and one impermanent, with inconsistent characteristics. Fourth, the atomists...

Some say that the ultimate atoms of the four elements, earth and so on, are permanent, and these atoms, driven by unseen karma, meet with two or more atoms, gradually forming substances with limbs, and ultimately produce various fruits. This is unreasonable. If atoms combine with each other to produce fruit, do they combine with their entire selves, or with some parts? If they combine with some parts, then the parts that combine become the cause of the fruit, and the parts that do not combine do not become the cause. If some of the combined parts of an atom are the cause, and some of the uncombined parts are not the cause, then that atom becomes a variety of natures of combination and non-combination, cause and non-cause. Since it is various, it cannot be permanent, just like paintings and so on. If, because atoms have no parts, they combine with their entire selves, then the round shape of the atom, which has no parts, will also exist in the fruit with limbs, because atoms are by nature a mixture of all parts. In this way, like atoms, substances with limbs will also be beyond the scope of the senses. Because the above-mentioned faults will occur, the round shape of the atom as the cause will not exist in the substance with limbs as the fruit, therefore, combining with the entire self is unreasonable for atoms. Furthermore, when atoms do not combine with their entire selves, the position of one atom cannot be the position of another atom, therefore, it is not considered that the atom as the cause and the substance with limbs as the fruit are equal in size, so although there is no fault of the substance with limbs being beyond the scope of the senses. However, the statement that various things cannot be permanent still exists. Some say: This fault only occurs when producing fruit, before producing fruit, atoms have no parts, so there is no fault as mentioned above. Answer: Even at that time, there are differences in directions such as east. Otherwise, the face of the atom facing east will also face other directions such as west, so that when combining, it is also the entire self.
