Therefore, any phenomenon that arises in any place or time without depending on causes and conditions simply does not exist. Because this is so, it is understood that in reality, there is never any permanent thing, such as space, that is not created by causes and conditions. Thus, it is established that the Tathagata sees things as they are, because things conceived by others are not interdependent, and therefore do not possess existence or permanence. The second part consists of six sections: refuting the self, refuting space, refuting time, refuting atoms, refuting permanent liberation, and refuting the permanence of the three times. The first section is: If happiness and other phenomena that arise interdependently exist, and the self is the cause of these phenomena or their aggregation, then the self exists and is permanent, because it exists and is without cause. If the self exists, then other permanent phenomena of the same kind also exist. But this is not reasonable, because things, nature, self, and permanence are just different names. Without a cause, there are no things, like rabbit horns. The uncertainty of space and so on is also unreasonable, because their existence would also be negated. If one wants to avoid this fault and admits that the self has a cause, then whatever has a cause is not permanent, like happiness and so on. Because this is so, the Buddha said that what is established from no cause is not established by the Knower of Reality. As it is said: The wise will know the laws of dependent arising, and will not rely on extreme views. The wise will know the laws with cause and condition, and the laws without cause and condition do not exist. If, because one sees that made things like pots and happiness are impermanent, one thinks that the unmade things like the self are permanent, then if one sees that impermanent things like pots are made, and if one admits that the unmade is permanent, then in reality, since one sees the existence of made things, the permanence of the unmade, like flowers in the sky, does not exist. The second part is: In the Abhidharma it says: Space and analytical cessation, and non-analytical

Because it is admitted that analytical cessations are permanent and existent. If it is said, does the admission (of permanence) harm the permanent unconditioned (dharmas)? (Answer:) That space and the two cessations, etc., are permanent is only speculated by sectarian proponents such as the Vaibhashikas who do not understand that these are merely names. The noble ones who are skilled in the true nature of things, let alone viewing them as ultimately real, do not even see the terms of permanence and existence in conventional terms. For example, space is merely the absence of form, analytical cessation is merely the abandonment of afflictions by wisdom, and non-analytical cessation is merely the non-arising due to the lack of causes and conditions; these are merely labeled with those names. The sutras say "permanent" because these do not exist as things, so they do not change; it is merely said to be "permanent" in this sense, not to primarily show what is to be established (as permanent). If it is said, space is permanent because it is pervasive. What is impermanent is not pervasive, like a pot. If it is said that space pervades all directions, then where does the part of space that is connected to the eastern pot, as the space with a direction, pervade? Does it not exist in all directions such as east and west? If it exists in all directions, then the eastern pot, which is inseparable from it, should also exist in all directions. If you want to avoid this fault and admit that the part of space that pervades the east does not exist in other directions, then you must admit that the space with a direction also exists very clearly in other directions such as the west. If so, then space itself becomes multiple and not pervasive. Third, those who assert time as a cause say that if time exists as a cause, then fruits such as sprouts will appear at some time, and even if causes and conditions exist, they will cease at some time due to the lack of certain conditions, from which the existence of time can be inferred. If time exists but the cause is not evident, then it is permanent. If so, then sprouts, etc., arising from permanent time should always arise, because the cause is always near. If it is said that its ability to produce fruit depends on other conditions, then time becomes subject to other conditions, and this (time) produces frui
