Moreover, in the cycle of existence, one does not truly recognize one's own nature due to the influence of qualities and other factors. In liberation, because one is not associated with other related things, the very nature that one recognizes as one's own is its own nature. Furthermore, since one realizes selflessness in liberation, one should also realize selflessness in the cycle of existence. Second, refuting the fault of annihilationism in selflessness: If there is no self, then all conditioned phenomena, which are of the nature of perishing moment by moment, will perish as soon as they arise, and therefore will become annihilation, if that is the thought. In the world, impermanence is not understood as meaning annihilation, because the causes and effects of grass, trees, and so on, which have been growing since the first kalpa, still continue to be seen. If impermanence meant annihilation, then how could there still be causes for impermanent things like grass and trees? It would become causeless. This must undoubtedly be admitted as such. If it is not so, and the view that the meaning of impermanence is the cessation of continuity is true, then no sentient being would ever develop ignorance, because impermanence itself is annihilation. "Moreover" includes things like happiness and desire. Therefore, one will attain liberation without effort. If one thinks that the cause of all things arising is a permanent self, and because of that cause, there will be no view of annihilation for things like grass that continue, then permanent things that do not depend on causes and conditions are like the horns of a donkey, which do not exist, as has already been said. Alternatively, even if one admits that there is a self, this self cannot be the cause of beings' wandering, because even if there is a self, external and internal forms will appear to arise from things other than the self (examine), just as fire arises from the meeting of a jewel fire-mirror and the sun, water arises from the meeting of a water crystal and the moon, sprouts arise from seeds, and eyes arise from eye diseases, and so on, as can be seen. Just as forms arise from other things, they also appear to exist in dependence on other things, because one can see that things like fire exist because of causes like firewood and fuel. They also appear to perish from other things, because the causes like firewood are incomplete. If the self causes beings to wander...

If it is the cause of things, then the arising and ceasing of all things depend on it. If it is not so, then it is selfless. When there is no arising from permanence, how can a sprout, which is without self-nature, arise from a seed, which is caused by other causes and conditions and is without self-nature? Likewise, the wise should know that all impermanent and selfless things, such as the cause and effect of things, such as annihilation and subtlety, arise from impermanent and selfless causes and conditions. In this way, for conditioned things, permanence and annihilation are like a vajra thunderbolt, destroying the causal relationship of samsara and nirvana, which the wise should also ward off from afar with the mantra of dependent origination. For example, just as a seed meets fire, if there is no continuation of fruits such as sprouts, it will become annihilation, because the fruit called sprout arises from the cause seed, so the cause seed will not become annihilation. If the sprout has already arisen, but the seed remains in its own state without changing, it will become permanent, because the thing of the seed has changed, so it will not become permanent either. Both the seed and the sprout, because their own state is not established, are neither the same nor different. This method of abandoning permanence and annihilation that you have spoken of is also present in your own school that claims that cause and effect are momentary, so will they not have the fault of permanence and annihilation? They claim that cause and effect are different entities, so the arising of the fruit does not eliminate the fault of the annihilation of the cause, just as the existence of a cow does not prevent the calf from dying. We claim that cause and effect are not different, so the arising of the fruit does not have the fault of the annihilation of the cause. Furthermore, they claim that cause and effect are established by their own nature, so they cannot transcend permanence and annihilation, as it is said: If one admits that things exist, then one will fall into the view of permanence and annihilation, because that thing is permanent and impermanent. This is the explanation of the tenth chapter of the Four Hundred Verses on the Yogic Practice, which is called "Showing the Meditation on the Refutation of Self."
