If it possesses the three characteristics mentioned above, then consciousness does not arise because each moment it engages with its object and therefore has no abiding. It is like the unconditioned. If there is no arising, how can there be impermanence? Therefore, consciousness is without inherent existence because it is free from the three states of arising, abiding, and ceasing. As it is said, "Consciousness is like an illusion, taught by the Kinsman of the Sun (Buddha)." Whatever is without inherent existence is empty like a reflection. Therefore, all three realms of what is completely imputed are also empty. Therefore, if a yogi truly understands that the arising and abiding of consciousness, etc., are without inherent existence and that consciousness is like a reflection, then afflictions such as desire will never abide in wisdom. In this way, the fire of afflictions is pacified, and the mind is purified, so that one can benefit beings and lead others onto this path. From the Four Hundred Verses on Yoga Practice, the explanation of the sixth chapter, which teaches the method of abandoning afflictions, is complete. Explanation of Chapter Seven Third, regarding the method of abandoning from the cause, there are three aspects: the faults of the result, cyclic existence; the method of abandoning from the cause; and the necessity of abandoning actions. The first is about the general faults of cyclic existence and, in particular, refuting attachment to the happy realms. The first part is further divided into two aspects: the main text and advice to strive for the exhaustion of existence. The first is that, desiring to abandon from the cause, it is explained to generate weariness towards it by showing the faults of the result, cyclic existence. Cyclic existence is a great ocean of suffering, pervading all directions, arising from beginningless time. It is filled with snakes of ignorance and pride, stirred by the water monsters of the sixty-two views, with many whirlpools of birth and death, the streams of blood, tears, and milk are abundant, the waves of aging, sickness, and death surge, filled with lamentation and wailing, suffering and discomfort, and various fish, turtles, and sea monsters thrashing about. The other shore and the bottom of this cyclic existence do not exist in any way. You ignorant ordinary beings,

In such a vast samsara, having been submerged since beginningless time, what reason is there not to feel fear? Even when submerged in an ocean whose depths are unseen and whose other shore is invisible, great fear arises from the apprehension of losing one's life. How much more should one feel fear and weariness when submerged in the endless ocean of suffering! If it is said that samsara has so many faults, yet those who are arrogant due to youth and so forth do not feel fear, it is because youth and so forth do not last forever, and one should not be arrogant because of them. For example, in this life, youth appears after old age has passed, and after death, it appears again in the future. Having appeared, it again appears after old age has passed, and is cut off by death, only to appear again in the future. Therefore, when children attain youth, they presume that they will always remain in that state, but in this world, youth, old age, and death appear as if they are racing against them. Because those states do not last forever, one should not be arrogant due to youth and so forth. If worldly people act as if they are racing and go to the next world, and even so, they do not feel fear because it is natural, then, in samsara, foolish one, you do not have the power to be reborn in other good realms such as gods and humans merely by your own will. Rather, you will be reborn according to how your karma propels you. While being under the control of karma and afflictions, to not feel fear about going to the next world is the height of ignorance. Who among the wise would be like that? Therefore, having realized that you are under the control of karma and afflictions, and that you do not know where you will be reborn, you should feel weary of going on day and night in samsara. Secondly, if it is said that samsara has such great faults, but because one is distracted by the pleasures of this life, one cannot cut off rebirth in this life, but will strive for future rebirths, then future rebirths are not the end, and the past has no beginning. All the times of the past have been your individual lives. Just as you have gone through the past without pacifying your afflictions, so too, your present life will not change. Therefore, strive to bring samsara to an end. As it is said, the adornment of trees
