Now, let's discuss the previous topic. The second part concerns the characteristics of individuals indulging in desire, etc., and the methods to subdue them, divided into two parts. The first part is: if we describe the characteristics of desire, etc., how can we know which beings are indulging in them? Describing their characteristics: always delighting in dances that hold the earth, laughter, charm, flowers, fragrances, ornaments, colors, and various gathering items; possessing a gentle and comfortable demeanor; being generous to others and also enjoying themselves; being clean and possessing wisdom and etiquette; speaking sweetly and frankly, etc. Such characteristics appear in people with desire. The opposite of this is indulging in hatred. Those who are mixed are characterized by indulging in ignorance. Therefore, one should infer a person's thoughts through the signs described above. The second part is: since we have spoken of the characteristics of individuals indulging in desire, etc., what are the methods to subdue them? The Buddhas said that for those with desire, one should desire food, Dharma robes, temples, etc., that generate non-attachment, inferiority, disagreeableness, and the abandonment of all that is virtuous and excellent. In this way, for those with desire, to counteract attachment to dwelling places, solitary places, under trees, cemeteries, and places without shelter are taught. To counteract attachment to bedding, simple seating and dwelling as it is are taught. To counteract attachment to food, begging for alms, eating in one sitting, and not accepting leftover food are taught. To counteract attachment to clothing, the three Dharma robes, robes made of rags, and wearing felt robes are taught. Therefore, for those with desire, to counteract attachment to temples, etc., twelve qualities of ascetic practice are established. Even Arhats rely on these to prevent those who delight in their own evil deeds. Initially, through these, they will tend towards Nirvana as indicated by these practices. A person with desire should always stay in the presence of the guru, and always through the guru's exhortations, this person's desire will be subdued, and even if lashed by improper attention, because of the weak protection, they will not transgress the boundaries of what has been learned. A person indulging in hatred is

These are the magnificent temples and secluded places for transforming actions. For those who indulge in delusion, these are impure. Secondly, regarding the specific methods for abandoning hatred: it is divided into three parts: the faults of anger, the antidote for abandoning anger, and the benefits of patience. The first part is: Furthermore, those who wish to abandon anger should recognize its faults. For example, becoming angry at someone who has no power to harm others will make one's face turn black and furrow one's brow, only making oneself look ugly. Because one has no power, one will not harm others. Becoming angry without compassion towards someone who has the power to harm others is the cause of all harm, such as taking the lives of others, and is therefore called vile. The second part is: If someone becomes angry and hateful upon hearing harsh words, that is extremely foolish. For example, hearing an unpleasant sound now is the result of one's own past actions that would lead to such an experience. Hearing abuse is like extracting the fruit, doesn't it mean that the sin is ended? Being ignorant of this is foolish and unholy. Becoming angry at the abuser is not only unwilling to purify oneself from past karma, but also becomes stained with the filth of sin again, so it is extremely foolish. For this reason, one should not be angry at harsh words, because the nature of harshness, which is unpleasant to hear, does not inherently cause harm. If it did cause harm, it would also harm the speaker. Therefore, the harm of hatred arises from the thought that "this person is slandering me in this way," so to assume that this harm comes from the speaker is purely presumptuous. Therefore, since the harm is caused by one's own thoughts, why be angry at others? If abuse is a fault, because the worldly law states that the abuser should be punished, then is it reasonable to be angry at the abuser? If, as it appears, abuse harms the heart, and the worldly law explicitly states that the abuser should be punished, then why not say that those who use sweet words to capture the hearts of others should be honored? Therefore, because it is unjust, the worldly law is not reliable. If abuse reveals one's own faults to others,
