Having eaten food and the senses being nourished, when all things are completely accomplished, desire will arise. Thus, following the faults of the body, afflictions arise in three stages during the day. Therefore, having recognized this, one should cautiously avert it as one would time itself. The third part generally explains how to abandon the three poisons, and specifically explains how to abandon anger. The first part (is divided into) the actual method of abandoning afflictions, and the characteristics of the person who practices it, along with the objects to be dealt with. The first part is: Desire enters under the guise of a friend and deceives the world, therefore one should strive to abandon it. Like this, hatred is accompanied by displeasure and comes to a person like an enemy. Because its harm is obvious, it is easy to protect oneself from it. Ignorance is accompanied by equanimity and comes in a neutral way. One does not trust it either, so it is easy to guard against. Desire, unlike an enemy who is not a friend, pretends to be a friend to deceive, and it steals the wealth of virtue. Although it is an enemy, it is accompanied by pleasure and arises in the continuum of a person like a friend. Therefore, you should not fear desire, but you must especially protect yourself from it. Is it not the case that something that pretends to be a friend, but is unhelpful and harmful, should be especially abandoned by people? Indeed, it should be so. How to guard against it? By always trusting, with outstanding diligence, through relying on the antidote, not giving it the opportunity to arise. There are two types of desire. One type arises effortlessly in this life from the cause of previous habitual tendencies, and the other arises from the condition of proximity to external objects. Among these, desire that arises from conditions is easy to accomplish with an antidote, because it will not arise if the conditions are abandoned. The other, which arises from a cause, is not so, because its roots are deep and difficult to avert with an antidote. Therefore, one should make great effort to avert it. Like desire, anger should also be diligently abandoned, because its faults are heavier than those of desire.

Thus, anger is to firmly hold onto resentment, and it is definitely and completely unwholesome, burning the continuum of one's own nature, causing meaningless things such as harming others, and committing great sins such as the five heinous crimes. Therefore, in any way, if one knows the classifications, bases, faults, and methods of abandoning all afflictions, and relies on the antidotes, then one will ultimately cut off the afflictions from their roots. If the characteristics of desire and hatred have been spoken, then what is the characteristic of ignorance? Just as by relying on the body in which the senses reside, the senses of the body, such as the eyes, pervade the other senses, and exist as their support, similarly, ignorance, which has the characteristic of clinging to what is empty of inherent existence as true, pervades all afflictions such as desire, and becomes their place. Because desire and so on also arise from ignorance, clinging to the nature of objects that are observed as either attractive or unattractive, and because ignorance is the main thing. Therefore, just as when the senses of the body cease, all the senses cease, so too, all afflictions arise in dependence, and thus are overcome by overcoming ignorance. How should this ignorance, the root of all meaningless things, be abandoned? If external and internal phenomena had inherent existence, they would not need to depend on causes and conditions, because what is already established does not need to be established again. However, these things are also seen to depend on their own causes and conditions. Therefore, because they are dependently arisen, they have no inherent existence. And not having inherent existence is emptiness. If one sees dependent arising as having no inherent existence in this way, then ignorance that clings to it as true will not arise, and by abandoning that, one will also abandon all desires and so on that depend on it. Therefore, the method of abandoning ignorance, which is to teach dependent arising, is of great significance. Therefore, with all effort, through all the treatises that will be explained in this treatise, the dependent arising of no inherent existence will be explained.
