It is not merely by experiencing objects that bring about happiness and suffering that birth (in samsara) arises, but it arises from attachment. For even those without desire would also have these births. In the teachings of the Bhagavan, in order to prevent those with desire from generating desire through the power of objects, the teachings on reducing the qualities of practice and possessions, etc., are given. For those with hatred, in order to prevent the arising of hatred, abundant food, robes, monasteries, etc., are provided. Therefore, only the Shakyas are practitioners of asceticism, because like those without desire, those with desire also engage in subduing afflictions through skillful means. The outsiders, however, are not practitioners of asceticism for subduing afflictions, because they are constantly tormented by the suffering of being afflicted by afflictions. Secondly, there are two types: the antidotes to afflictions and the common antidotes. The first is divided into three: the functions of each affliction, the order in which they arise, and how to abandon them. The first is divided into the main text and how to guide individuals accordingly. The first is: wishing to abandon desire and so on, one should know the functions of these afflictions and then rely on their antidotes. For example, the function of desire is to accumulate objects, both sentient and non-sentient, because one clings to them with attachment. Its antidote is to abandon retinue and possessions. The function of anger is to quarrel and fight, because it completely turns away (from the Dharma). Its antidote is not to gather assemblies, to cultivate loving-kindness, and to enjoy monasteries and so on that are pleasing to the mind. Just as the power of all elements, such as fire, is increased by wind, the function of ignorance is to nourish desire and hatred, because it does not see faults in its own objects. Its antidote is to strive to discern the nature of things as they are. Although there are these methods for abandoning desire and so on, why are these to be abandoned? Because they are the source of suffering. For example, desire suffers from not encountering the desired object, anger suffers from not having the strength to destroy the powerful, and ignorance suffers from not fully understanding subtle meanings.

When afflictions such as desire overwhelm, not realizing those sufferings is even greater suffering. Therefore, these afflictions, like enemies wielding weapons, should be abandoned. Secondly, just as ignorance arises together with both desire and hatred, do desire and hatred also arise together? Just as phlegm, transformed from water, and bile, transformed from fire, are incompatible and cannot meet, similarly, anger and desire are not seen to meet in the same continuum, because attachment and aversion are mutually contradictory. Just as wind moves together with both phlegm and bile because they are compatible, so too, ignorance moves together with both desire and hatred. If desire and hatred were not contradictory, then practicing the antidote to one would cause the other to increase. Therefore, having understood that desire and hatred are contradictory, the teacher who trains disciples should treat those with strong desire like a slave whose whip has been cut off, constantly employing them in work, without ceasing in the three doors of body, speech, and mind. Because not allowing them to be idle or lazy is the antidote to desire, as there is no opportunity for desire to arise when working. Those with strong anger should be treated like a lord, served with abundant food, clothing, and so forth. Because not allowing them to be impoverished and serving them respectfully is the antidote to anger, as poverty is the antidote to anger. Ignorance is subdued by engaging in or refraining from reasoning, as appropriate. Similar to desire is refraining from reasoning, and similar to hatred is engaging in reasoning. Secondly, one should also ascertain the times when these afflictions arise, and then practice the appropriate antidote according to the time. For example, because one works during the day and mostly sleeps and is drowsy at night, and because phlegm is dominant, for beings, the very first time of day, which is morning, is when ignorance truly arises. Afterwards, because one engages in various activities such as farming and trading, and because phlegm subsides and bile becomes dominant, from morning to afternoon, around noon, anger will arise. Later, after the sun sets, having washed the body and
