If Bodhisattvas are the treasure of merit, why is it that in the Jataka tales and other scriptures, only the sound of generosity of Bodhisattvas is praised, and not other virtues such as discipline? Because the sound of generosity, called "Dana" (དཱ་ན་, dana, dāna, giving) in Sanskrit, when explained in detail with etymological definitions, sometimes eliminates death, because generosity is related to aversion and compliance; sometimes it clarifies the characteristics of the three types of giving; sometimes it clarifies that by guarding and purifying the three doors of body, speech, and mind, other existences are manifestly accomplished as desired. Therefore, for Bodhisattvas, the sound of generosity is always praised. If it is said that only the generosity of Bodhisattvas is infinite, and other virtues are not, then what is the difference? If someone thinks that the generosity performed in this life will produce great results in the future, and therefore engages in taking and giving wealth for profit, this, like a material transaction for profit, will be condemned by the noble ones. Bodhisattvas give completely out of compassion, solely for the benefit of others, therefore, the merit arising from their giving is inexhaustible. Sixth, a Bodhisattva who has accumulated an infinite mass of merit in this way, even if there is a small amount of sin committed in the past in the state of an ordinary being, it is overwhelmed by the great power of virtue and cannot produce results. As it is said in the scriptures: "A few ounces of salt cannot change the taste of water, nor can it change the Ganges River. Likewise, even a small act of sin, know that the root of virtue is vast." Therefore, for a Bodhisattva with virtuous deeds, there is no such thing as not being able to accomplish the benefit of sentient beings, because they will accomplish all the benefits of sentient beings, because they have no sin at all, and have accumulated infinite roots of virtue. If Bodhisattvas are completely virtuous and do not regress in samsara, then why do they not enter Nirvana? Because Bodhisattvas have a great intention to benefit others.

For sentient beings, abiding in samsara is like a lotus not being stained by water; the mind is not defiled by all afflictions, and the suffering of birth, old age, sickness, and death cannot harm them. Therefore, for them, there is no difference between abiding in samsara and entering nirvana, so they do not enter nirvana. From the initial generation of bodhicitta, Bodhisattvas can freely benefit other sentient beings. What is the cause for this? For the excellent Bodhisattvas who have accumulated the two accumulations, because they have already attained mastery over the mind, they consciously take birth in samsara to benefit others. So, why don't they become the lords of all worlds at all times? Because they certainly will become lords. The third question is: What inconceivable results will arise from the Bodhisattvas' practice in this way? This is reasonable. Just as different fruits arise from different seeds such as barley, sesame, and rice, excellent results can also arise from excellent causes. Therefore, one can acknowledge the inconceivable power of the Buddhas. Just like this, excellence, which is surpassing the excellent, and even the most excellent, can be seen in some examples in the world, such as the most excellent among castes is the Brahmin, the most excellent among birthplaces is the Peak of Existence, the most excellent among mountains is Mount Meru, and the most excellent among kings is the Universal Monarch. Similarly, the most excellent among wisdoms will ultimately give rise to omniscience. Therefore, the arising of a corresponding result from an excellent cause is known even to children in the world. Here, the vast accumulation of the two accumulations by the Bodhisattvas will inevitably produce a corresponding result, which is the inconceivable power of the Buddhas. Be certain of this. The fourth question is: Since the Great Vehicle with its cause and effect is reasonable and meaningful as described above, why don't most sentient beings tend towards the Great Vehicle and its result—Buddhahood?

If one does not revere inconceivable power, it is because those of weak intellect fear the profound and vast. Just as fools, unable to distinguish weak intellect, develop fear towards the extremely profound Dharma—dependent arising, the nature of non-arising—similarly, due to inferior lineage and intellect, others also become distrustful and fearful of the exceedingly marvelous, profound, and vast Mahayana and the extraordinary power of the Tathagatas. Just because of that, it does not cease to exist; therefore, wishing to embrace all beings, one should generate joy in the Mahayana, complete with cause and effect, and especially venerate it. From the Four Hundred Verses on Yoga Practice: Explanation of the Chapter on the Conduct of a Bodhisattva, which is the commentary on the fifth chapter.
