Therefore, one makes offerings with various kinds of offerings, such as songs and dances. If some people, for the sake of enlightenment, cause a single sentient being to generate the mind of enlightenment and subdue them, then the latter, the one who subdues a single sentient being for the sake of enlightenment, is said to have the most excellent merit. Because the former only creates a place for the Tathagata (Buddha), while the latter does the work of ensuring that the lineage of the Buddha is not cut off and that the sacred Dharma abides for a long time. Secondly, for a Bodhisattva who possesses conventional Bodhicitta, it is not through the practice of cultivating the mind of enlightenment, but through the action of contemplating altruistic deeds, that they subdue sentient beings, because the power of afflictions is strong, the power of antidotes is weak, and they do not know how to subdue sentient beings according to their faculties and latent thoughts. For a Bodhisattva who possesses ultimate Bodhicitta, one should solely take on the responsibility of benefiting sentient beings, because the reasons are the opposite of the former. How does this Bodhisattva benefit sentient beings? It is by guiding them in accordance with their thoughts. Therefore, a teacher who wants to benefit the disciple, first, in order to make the disciple have faith in himself, should serve the disciple with generosity and pleasant speech, etc. Once faith has arisen, then he should accept them by giving them appropriate teachings and guidance according to their faculties. For example, an elephant trainer first gives the elephant fodder, sugar, etc. to employ it, and then uses a hook to subdue it. Shouldn't the disciple serve the teacher? How should the teacher serve the disciple? Indeed. But this (the teacher serving the disciple) is because foolish people do not understand that they should serve the teacher for their own benefit. Because the disciple does not understand what is beneficial and what is not, he needs to be guided, and therefore he is called a disciple. If even after serving, the disciple is not respectful and instead refutes, etc., doing unreasonable things, one should not be discouraged by this, because one must destroy the afflictions that make him bad-tempered. For example, some patients possessed by spirits sometimes get angry and scold, but the doctor does not get angry because of it.

Thus, the Sugata Buddha Bhagavan and Bodhisattvas, who are skilled in the methods of taming sentient beings, regard the afflictions that make sentient beings fierce as faults, but do not view the individuals associated with afflictions as faults. In this way, without disturbing the minds of others and accomplishing things in accordance with them, when disciples have great faith, instructions appropriate to their capacity should be given. Thus, to the miserly, give the talk of generosity; to the angry, give the talk of patience; those who do not like immoral conduct, give the talk of moral discipline; to those who desire enjoyment, give the talk of generosity; to those who desire rebirth in higher realms, give the talk of moral discipline; to those who desire good looks, give the talk of patience, making them happy. Therefore, whatever the being to be tamed likes, such as generosity, etc., one should first examine what they desire, and later, when they have become a vessel, one should explain the profound. Whatever they do not like, one should not apply it at first. If one is displeased by discordant words at the beginning and the continuum deteriorates, then one will certainly not become a vessel for the holy Dharma. Thus, when accomplishing benefit, even if one has been turned back a hundred times, Bodhisattvas should be especially compassionate to those who repeatedly engage in what is unreasonable. Just as a mother is especially compassionate to a child afflicted with a serious illness compared to other children, so too, the compassion of a Bodhisattva arises especially for those non-holy ones whose minds are disturbed by afflictions and who engage in inappropriate actions, rather than those who abide in the true nature of sentient beings. Just as fire arises from the difference in firewood, so too, the compassion of a Bodhisattva arises with excellence and completeness by focusing on the suffering of others. Because the compassion of a Bodhisattva especially increases for the non-holy, therefore, when accomplishing the purposes of sentient beings with various dispositions, thoughts, and inclinations, those who consider themselves superior do not honor others with qualities. To tame such people, one should make oneself a disciple and then show them benefit. Those who think of themselves as inferior, one should make oneself a guru and then guide them by showing distinctions.
