Because all the elements arise from being assembled. The elements are engaged in harming each other. For example, earth makes the movement of wind slow, and wind scatters the element of earth. Water harms the element of fire, and fire also dries up the element of water. Therefore, the elements are mutually contradictory. And when these contradictory elements gather together in one body, they are the cause of suffering, so it is unreasonable to say that there is happiness. If it is said that even though the elements are contradictory, happiness can be obtained from them through treatment, that is also incorrect. Because when a person suffers from illness, fever, and other sufferings, the means of treatment are not always readily available. When threatened by cold, one relies on clothing and bedding that have warming properties; when threatened by heat, one relies on sandalwood and other things that have cooling properties. Therefore, relying on antidotes to alleviate suffering, merely reducing it slightly, and then presuming it to be happiness, is completely upside down. Merely reducing suffering slightly and calling it happiness is unreasonable in any way. If it is said that there is happiness because one sees expressions such as "Devadatta is lying down happily" in the world, that is also incorrect. Because the activity of lying down and so on without physical and mental effort does not exist on earth. Effort is also the cause of physical and mental suffering, so it is unreasonable in any way to say that performing actions such as lying down is happiness. If it is said that in the world, one engages in sinful actions for the sake of sensory pleasure, and therefore one experiences much suffering, so there is happiness, that is also incorrect. Because those who crave objects, engaging in sinful actions for the sake of a little sensory pleasure, will experience toil and bondage in this life, and suffering such as hell in the next. Therefore, the wise, desiring their own happiness, must always protect themselves from the suffering that is the cause of sin in this world and the next. Therefore, it is unreasonable in any way to say that engaging in sin for the sake of happiness, leading to falling into the lower realms, is happiness. If it is said that here, people who seek happiness ride horses and elephants and other mounts, and they feel happy because of that, that is also incorrect. Because riding and

Things like food and drink are considered sources of happiness, but people's happiness is not always constant, because prolonged indulgence in these things ultimately leads to increased suffering. How can something like riding, which initially has only a small amount of suffering, eventually grow into great suffering? Therefore, from beginning to end, only suffering arises, so there is no happiness in things like riding. If it is said that there is happiness in relieving suffering, and without it, suffering cannot be relieved, is there happiness for the sake of relieving suffering? Just as vomit in a golden vessel and vomit in an earthen vessel are both equally suffering, why do some rich people vomit in golden vessels while maids vomit in earthen vessels? If they think they are in a state of perfect power and feel happy, just like that, children without learning also think that relieving suffering from heat and cold is happiness. If it is said that there is happiness because the thought of happiness arises when shifting a burden from one shoulder to the other, there is no happiness in that either. Like this, when the right shoulder has been carrying the burden for a long time, and the suffering increases and becomes tiring, it is shifted to the left shoulder. That is also just the initial creation of a small amount of suffering, and the thought of happiness arises only when the previous suffering becomes greater and the increase stops. What happiness is there in initially creating a small amount of suffering? And what happiness is there when great suffering stops? Because if you analyze carefully, there is not even a little happiness. Therefore, the Able One (Shakyamuni Buddha) said that when the son of Katyayana is born, only suffering arises, and when he dies, only suffering ceases, so birth and death are suffering. That is what I think. If it is said that suffering exists by its very nature, but it is obscured by a greater amount of happiness and cannot be seen, if individual ordinary beings think that suffering exists by its very nature, but it is covered by happiness and cannot be seen, then if there is not even a little happiness that can obscure suffering, how can it be obscured and invisible? How happiness does not exist has already been explained. If the body is inherently suffering, then what is the point of specifically pointing it out?
