Therefore, those with wisdom should understand that this is the uncommon view of the noble Nāgārjuna and his spiritual sons. It is sufficient to mention it in passing. Now, I will explain the distinctions. There are two types of ultimate truth: the essential ultimate truth and the nominal ultimate truth. What is the nature of the first? It has already been explained, and it has no distinctions because it is uniform everywhere like space and transcends the realm of language. The second is as stated in the "Two Truths": "The negation of arising, etc., is also in accordance with the ultimate, therefore, I accept it as the ultimate." Therefore, if it is unborn emptiness, etc., then from the perspective of what is to be negated, there are two types: the selflessness of persons and the selflessness of phenomena. From the perspective of the nature of phenomena, there are the sixteen emptinesses and twenty emptinesses, etc., as mentioned in the sutras. Conventional truth is also as stated in the "Two Truths": "Although appearances are similar, their functions differ. The ability and inability to function distinguish between correct and incorrect conventional truths." Therefore, forms, sounds, etc., that can function are called correct conventional truths, and illusions, moon reflections in water, etc., that cannot function are called incorrect conventional truths. These are merely taken as correct or incorrect by the minds of ordinary people. In reality, both are false and deceptive phenomena, with no difference. As stated in the "Entering the Middle Way": "Whatever is perceived by the six unimpaired senses is considered true by the world. The rest is said to be false according to the world. This is the worldly convention." This is the meaning. Alternatively, they can also be divided into the conventional truth of the noble ones and the conventional truth of ordinary beings. The first is forms, sounds, etc., to which ordinary beings are attached. The noble ones who see the Dharma understand these as chaff, empty, and without essence, like illusions, etc. The second is moon reflections in water, echoes, illusions, etc. Even ordinary beings can fully discern these false and deceptive phenomena. The basis for distinguishing these two truths is merely appearance, as stated in the "Entering the Middle Way": "Those who see all phenomena as true see them as false. Their view of the two

Because (in the sutra) it says, "Will believe." The reason for distinguishing is that the way the minds of the noble ones and ordinary beings grasp is different. Therefore, it is from the perspective of the object-possessor that the two truths are distinguished, but in reality, they do not exist as two. If the conventional existed in the ultimate meaning, it would not become conventional; otherwise, it would become ultimate. Therefore, if the conventional does not exist in the ultimate meaning, then there is no such thing as the so-called ultimate, because the terms of truth and falsehood are established in mutual dependence. If that is the case, why is it called the ultimate truth? Because it does not exist in the ultimate meaning like the conventional truth. If the Madhyamikas do not at all accept the so-called ultimate truth, then why do they seek fault-finding? If the Madhyamikas have not made a distinction between the two truths, then who would say that this is their own view? If it is said that it is expounding the view of others, then for those who have no own view, where would there be the view of others? Can one see in the world a shore without the other shore, or short without long? Then whose view is it? You, who have been accustomed to distinguishing between your own and others' views since beginningless time, speak. As for me, when distinguishing reality, I have attained the asceticism of saying nothing. However, just as a magical person shows the distinction of the two truths to people, the Madhyamikas such as the noble Nagarjuna, who abide in the ground of non-extremity, do not definitively say, 'This is their own view, this is the view of others,' but merely make the distinction of the two truths as a means of following those with manifest biases. We, who are manifest partisans, then falsely discriminate, thinking, 'This is the view of the Madhyamikas, which is reasonable, and that is the view of other schools, which is unreasonable.' Therefore, the meaning of non-extremity is the ultimate truth, and the other is the conventional truth. This is merely the view of us, who boast of being Madhyamikas and are manifest partisans, and not the view of the great beings such as Nagarjuna, because they have realized the ground of dependent origination and have no partisanship or commitment.
