Of kinds. If one indulges in such behavior, Won't one fall into a state of regret and suffering? Now, let's discuss whether the two truths are one or different. In reality, these two truths are neither one nor different. Because, if they were one, like the conventional truth for children, one would also realize the ultimate truth, thus being liberated without effort. Or the ultimate truth would become the cause of purifying the conventional, or like the conventional truth, the ultimate truth would also become complex and an object for increasing afflictions. If they were different, then even if yogis realized the ultimate truth, they would not abandon their attachment to the conventional, and the ultimate truth would become not the nature of the conventional. Therefore, the *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra* says, "Those who conceive the aggregates and realms and the nature of the ultimate as one or different, these have not entered properly." This is what was said. From the perspective of analytical observation, that is how it is said, but if not from the perspective of observation, the two truths are only different, otherwise they would not become two truths. Moreover, it is unreasonable to separately proclaim their natures, and without different appearances to the mind, there would be no liberation. Thus, the distinction of the two truths has been briefly stated. Now, I will relate a little about the history of the Madhyamaka treatises that distinguish the two truths, and the teachers who composed them. After the Tathāgata passed into nirvāṇa, the ways of the Mahāyāna declined in this Jambudvīpa, and only the teachings of the Śrāvakayāna remained, and the Buddhist schools became predominantly Sarvāstivāda and Sautrāntika. Those who respected and cherished the Mahāyāna sūtras diminished due to the times. Because of this, many sūtras, such as the *Dharma Skandha*, were wasted. Most of the profound and vast sūtras, such as the Prajñāpāramitā, were said to reside in the realm of the Nāga kings. Writing to the disciples: The Dharma is precious like a jewel, excellent and unparalleled, completely pure...

Whoever has the splendor of a serpent's head, Is respectfully received by great ones as a jewel on their crown, And eliminates the darkness dwelling in the depths of the earth. This is what was said. Thereafter, four hundred years after the Blessed One's passing into nirvana, the noble Nāgārjuna was born in the southern land of Vidarbha, into a royal family of the serpent-headed caste. Having renounced in the Buddha's teachings, he invited many Mahāyāna sūtras, such as the Prajñāpāramitā, from the land of the nāgas. He dispelled the stain of clinging to entities by the proponents of self and other schools, such as the Vaibhāṣikas and Sautrāntikas, and composed the collections of Madhyamaka reasoning in order to lead them to realize the principle of non-extremity. Regarding this, there are two aspects: refuting truly existent objects to be refuted, and refuting the reasoning of logical analysis that establishes them. The first is further divided into: the Root Wisdom, which refutes all proponents of self and other schools in common, and the Sixty Stanzas on Reasoning, which specifically refutes one's own school. These two are based on the general principle of dependent origination and explain it, and in order to refute all collections of elaboration, they constitute the complete body of the Madhyamaka treatises. The Seventy Stanzas on Emptiness and the Refutation of Objections are derived from the Root Wisdom. The first, in the chapter on examining compounded phenomena: Like a dream, like an illusion, Like a city of gandharvas, Likewise is birth, likewise is cessation, Likewise is said to be abiding. This is the treatise that establishes this single verse. The second, in the chapter on examining conditions: The nature of things, If there are no conditions, etc., Then there is no self-nature, How could there be other-nature? This is the reply to an objection. The second, the refutation of the reasoning of logical analysis that establishes them, is the Thorough Examination. It refutes all the words and meanings of logical analysis, such as valid cognition and the knowable. It is not a complete treatise, nor is it a branch treatise, but it is an independent treatise that is dedicated to refuting the views of others. Some say that with the Treatise on Terminology, there are six collections of reasoning. End of the Clear Words.
