That's how it is. Firstly, those who assert the tenets of themselves and others, whatever is completely imputed as self and phenomena, those cannot be the conventional truth, as has been said before. Secondly, the terms that are known in the world are merely these factors that arise dependently on conditions. Among these, there are two types: terms that are actually known in the world, and those that are not actually known but can be known. The first type includes things like "Go!", "Sit!", "Take!", and so on. The second type includes terms that are known in the scriptures, such as the path, what is to be abandoned, the antidote, samsara, nirvana, and so on. These are not to be refuted merely as terms, because they cannot be refuted, they should not be refuted, and if they are refuted, it will lead to faults. Now, let's talk a little about these terms that are actually known in the world. They cannot be refuted by reason, because worldly people use terms without incorporating the approval of reason, and they do not accept analysis by reason. If someone says that they refute a term that has not been analyzed by incorporating the approval of reason, that will only become irrelevant rambling. For example, if someone says that their property was stolen by a thief, and you ask, "What is the property?" and they answer, "It's a vase," then the vase is not a thing, but rather a conventional truth that is merely an aggregation of parts such as form. It's like that. It is also not necessary to refute them, because if there is no bias, even if you just follow the terms, it will not cause any faults. Refuting them will also lead to faults, because by following the terms, you yourself will not be able to engage in acceptance and rejection, nor will you be able to get others to engage in acceptance and rejection, and all terms will be cut off, and you will have to adopt the ascetic practice of not saying anything, like a rhinoceros. Seeing this meaning, the Bhagavan also said, "Worldly people argue with me, but I do not argue with worldly people." And in the Entering the Middle Way, it also says, "If the world does not harm you, then you should refute it in accordance with the world. You and the world should argue here, and afterwards I will rely on the one with power."

This is what I said. Those terms commonly used in treatises, as previously mentioned, cannot be prohibited from being used as terms. As long as conceptualization is not abandoned, karma and its results, abandonment and cultivation, and so on, will still exist. Nor is it necessary to prohibit them, because without attachment, following the terms of karma and its results can lead to the unclear and draw out virtues. If prohibited, it would demean karma and its results, leading to the fault of falling into the extreme of endless annihilationism. If one clings to these, one will be bound, so what should be refuted is that which is truly established. The means of refutation are scripture and reasoning. For outsiders, only reasoning can be used to refute, not scripture, because they do not accept scripture. For our own schools, both scripture and reasoning can be used to refute. Among them, the Vaibhashikas and Sautrantikas can only be refuted by the scriptures known as the Hearers' Sutras, not by those known as the Great Vehicle, because they do not accept the Great Vehicle. Therefore, the teacher (Nagarjuna) also said in the Root Verses of the Middle Way: "The Blessed One, knowing existence and non-existence, taught Katyayana, rejecting both existence and non-existence." This means that he only used the Sutra of Instructions to Katyayana of the Small Vehicle as his source. Here, regarding those who slander the Great Vehicle as non-Buddha's words, what kind of person are they, when did they appear, and what are the reasons for their slander? Some say that these people are one of the ancient Hearer Saṃghabhadra sects. Nowadays, most people think that all Hearers are like this. But this is not the case, because Bodhisattvas have heard many Great Vehicle sutras together with the Blessed One, and although they themselves do not practice accordingly, they still teach those with the Great Vehicle lineage according to the Blessed One's teachings. How could these great upholders of the teachings slander the Great Vehicle? Therefore, the words of those people are not to be taken seriously. The previous view is also incorrect. If no one other than Saṃghabhadra slanders the Dharma of the Great Vehicle, how could the Vaibhashikas and Sautrantikas from the Great Vehicle sutras
