Saying there is no inherent existence, and saying, 'O sons of the Victorious Ones, these three realms are only mind!' and so forth. If one considers the three natures, the five dharmas, the two selflessnesses, the eight consciousness aggregates, and so forth, as provisional, how does it relate to reason? If one considers them as definitive, how does it not contradict one's own tenets? If one does not consider those Mahayana sutras as either provisional or definitive, then how does one consider them not to be the teachings of the Great Vehicle? Therefore, all Vaibhashika and Sautrantika schools consider the Great Vehicle not to be the Buddha's word. Because in the treatises such as the Abhidharmakosha, which explain their own tenets, there is not even a slight explanation of the Mahayana sutras, and their views contradict the Mahayana sutras in every way. The time is after the Tathagata's passing into nirvana. As Master Vasubandhu said: 'The teacher, the eye of the world, has closed, and most of the witnesses have passed away. Not seeing them, following their own will, evil thoughts corrupt this teaching. Those who cherish the self-born, self-born teachings, the supreme peaceful protector of beings, without taming, destroy virtues. The defilements will be purified, now examine this.' Therefore, it is said. The reason for the accusation is as previously stated. After the Bhagavan passed into nirvana, the teachings of the Great Vehicle declined for a long time. The noble Nagarjuna clearly explained the Tathagata's intention as it was, and many sutras prophesied that he would extensively propagate the Dharma. As it is said in the Lankavatara Sutra: 'Four hundred years after my nirvana, in the land of Vidarbha in southern India, there will be a monk named Shri-man, whose name will be called Naga. He will extensively teach my teachings in the world, attain the Joyful Ground, and go to Sukhavati.' And in the Mahamegha Sutra it is also said: 'Ananda, this young Licchavi, named Sarvasattvapriyadarshana, four hundred years after my complete nirvana, there will appear one named Naga...'

Because (the Buddha) had said that if someone were to become a monk, my teachings would be greatly propagated, and eventually in the world called "Extremely Joyful Light," he would become the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened Buddha named "Wisdom Source Light." Therefore, the great self, the noble Nagarjuna, newly revealed the unprecedented Mahayana Dharma. As it is said in the Ornament of the Sutras: "Those without lineage, with bad companions, who have not accumulated merit in the past, and whose minds are not subdued, will be afraid of this Dharma." This means that those who do not possess the Mahayana lineage, who have not accumulated roots of virtue in the past, and therefore do not have the fortune to be interested in the profound and vast Dharma, the Vaibhashika and Sautrantika pandits of that time, merely because they had not heard of the Mahayana teachings for a long time, and because it did not conform to their own views, they slandered it with various false reasons such as "This is fabricated by Nagarjuna and other poets, and is not the teaching of the Tathagata." Therefore, the person who slandered the Mahayana, the time of its occurrence, and the reasons, are not clearly recorded in the Indian treatises. Therefore, it seems that the Tibetan scholars have also not been able to explain it as it is. But by comparing the treatises of the noble Nagarjuna and his disciples, I have truly understood the meaning and recorded it, and I request the impartial spiritual friends to have deep faith in this from now on. Although the Yogachara Cittamātra school admits the Mahayana, it can also be refuted by the famous scriptural proofs in the Mahayana. However, in the treatises of the noble Nagarjuna, there is no part that refutes the Vijnanavada. The reason for this is that after Nagarjuna founded the Mahayana, Acharya Asanga appeared and founded the vast path of the Vijnaptimatra. If the views of the Vijnanavada existed before Asanga, then in the collections of reasoning of the noble Nagarjuna, since all internal and external entities have been refuted, why would he need to refute the Vijnanavada separately?
