It should not be said so. Because this great being has accepted the tenets of the Vijnanavada school. It also cannot be said so, because it contradicts prophecies such as "destroying the sides of existence and non-existence," and also because their treatises are in every way incompatible with Vijnanavada. Some people say, "Nagarjuna and Asanga, their tenets are the same," this was said by Rinchen Jungne (Ratnakara Shanti). This is clearly a statement that imposes one's own wishes on others. If these two teachers had the same view, then what is the difference between Madhyamaka and Vijnanavada? How can the four statements of tenets be established? Why is there not even a little bit of scriptural citation from Nagarjuna and his son in the treatises of the Asanga brothers? Why do Nagarjuna (manuscript unclear), Lekdenjey, etc. not regard the treatises of the Asanga brothers, etc. as प्रमाण (pramāṇa, measure)? And how can one first establish a thesis and then refute it? Therefore, this is like the great Pandit (manuscript unclear) confusing jewels and glass, confusing gold and brass, it is a very inappropriate statement, and should not be listened to. Therefore, the Asanga brothers did not follow the Holy Nagarjuna, but separately explained the intent of the Mahayana. In Lekdenjey's Tarkajvala, it is said that the teachers of the Mahayana, Asanga and Vasubandhu, etc. are other (anya) prophesied by the Tathagata, and the Holy Nagarjuna, who attained the Joyful Ground, leads the meaning of the Mahayana, which he correctly understood, to other places, and those who are shameless, do not distinguish right from wrong, but are self-righteous and arrogant, say this: The nectar of the only truth is completely explained by us, but not by the Madhyamikas. Etc. The glorious Chandrakirti also said in the commentary on the Entering Path, even if the authors of treatises such as Vasubandhu, Dignaga, and Dharmapala have already appeared, they are only frightened by hearing the words, because of dependent origination.

If someone asks, "Has the meaning of dependent arising, which is shown without distortion, been completely abandoned?" The answer is: "Thus it is said." And again, if asked, "How should this be realized?" The answer is: "It should be explained." This profound and terrifying meaning that has already been explained, beings can definitely understand only through the power of past habituation. Although this principle is widely heard, it is difficult for others to comprehend. Therefore, seeing those who grasp at self-created reasoning as their own, like those treatises, one should abandon delight in other doctrines and generate joy in this doctrine. Thus, and so on, is to explain that those teachers do not follow the noble Nāgārjuna. So, from what time did the tenets of the Mind-Only school arise? According to the author of the hundred commentaries on the *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra*, the noble Asaṅga appeared nine hundred years after the Buddha's nirvāṇa. From this, it is clear that it must have arisen at the end of the life of the noble Nāgārjuna, or when his direct disciples, such as the teacher Guṇamati, were alive. The noble Āryadeva said in the *Compendium of Wisdom Essence*: "The Buddha's Dharma has four aspects, seen manifestly by those who desire, the path of the Vaibhāṣikas and others, is to accomplish that very meaning." Thus, it is divided into four schools. Moreover, in the *Madhyamakahṛdaya* and the *Madhyamakāvatāra*, the tenets of the Mind-Only school are extensively refuted. Furthermore, if there were proponents of the Mind-Only school before Asaṅga, then it would be reasonable for the fundamental treatises to say, "So-and-so teacher composed such-and-such treatise," but in reality, this does not appear anywhere. Therefore, it is certain that the founder of the Mind-Only school was only the noble Asaṅga. Thus, after the Tathāgata's nirvāṇa, only the noble Nāgārjuna founded the great path of the Middle Way, free from extremes. After that, how the disciples explained the teacher's intention is that the noble Āryadeva, who was born miraculously from a lotus flower in the king's garden in Siṃhala (Sri Lanka), was known among the scholars and siddhas of noble India as being no different from the teacher himself, and the treatises also take this as their source. This teacher composed the *Four Hundred Verses* and other teachings that follow the Middle Way.
