Even now, they do not admit to having their own system. As it says in the "Entering the Middle Way": "Just as you accept other-powered entities as real, I do not accept conventionalities either. For the sake of results, I say these exist even though they do not, in the face of the world." This is why. Furthermore, during debates, if the teachers of the Svātantrika school do not establish their own system but only refute the systems of others, it is engaging in pointless debate, which is unreasonable. Even if their own views, such as emptiness and non-arising, are not established by valid cognition, and others believe that things have arising and inherent existence, they cannot be refuted merely by pointing out flaws. Therefore, in conventional terms, some Svātantrikas should be accepted who, in order to establish their own system's assertions of non-arising and so forth, use reasons and examples that are not established by valid cognition, because they cannot establish their own system's assertions with signs that others accept. This is what they believe. As for the Prāsaṅgikas, if they have their own assertions but deliberately do not establish their own system out of fear of others' criticisms, or if they refute others' systems merely by pointing out flaws out of hatred for others' views, then even if they become cunning individuals who engage in pointless debate, if the Madhyamikas have no position whatsoever to be established for themselves, then what is the use of searching for its proof? In reality, it is not even refuting others, because if one could find even a little bit of something to be refuted, then it would be reasonable to refute it. However, if even a fraction of a hair's breadth cannot be found, then who would say they are refuting it? Any time that others' views are presented in treatises and various kinds of rational analysis are made, it is not because of hatred for others' systems or a love of debate, but rather to reverse the clinging of these beings bound by the net of conceptualization. It is done purely for the sake of others. As it says in the "Entering the Middle Way": "It is not for the sake of enjoying analysis and debate that treatises are composed; it is to reveal the true nature for the sake of liberation." This is why. Therefore, all the various kinds of rational analysis that are done in the Madhyamika treatises are for the purpose of dispelling the imputational thoughts of the opponents.

It is only the fruit of conceptualization. If imputation is not removed, then some conceptualizations do not arise from the power of analysis, because the meaning of reality is not the object of analysis through hearing and thinking. As it is said in the Engaging in Bodhisattva Deeds: "Ordinary beings are bound by conceptualization, while yogis without conceptualization are said to be liberated. What is the nature of distorted conceptualization? The wise say it is the fruit of analysis." These conceptualizations of imputation are also refuted by stating the fault of self-contradiction. When self-contradiction is seen in one's own assertion, those who are not clever will change their attachment due to their own commitment. If someone does not give up even after seeing the contradiction, or does not distinguish between contradiction and non-contradiction, then they cannot be accepted, and should only be kept neutral for a while, and no arguments should be made. If it is effective for some debaters because they are too attached to the Svātantrika inference, then there is no fault in applying some well-known reasons to the Svātantrika for that debater. If there is no assertion of one's own system, then the scriptures say: "Not from self, not from other, not from both, nor without cause, no entity anywhere ever has any birth." Didn't it state the four assertions that things do not arise from themselves, etc.? This is acknowledged only as the position of others in order to refute those who think that things arise from themselves, etc., and is not one's own position. If there is something to be refuted, then it is reasonable to acknowledge the refutation of that object. However, here, since the object of refutation, such as self-arising, is not established, it is not reasonable to acknowledge the refutation of that object. Furthermore, this system cannot be refuted by others at all, because it does not acknowledge its own position. Those who debate also only debate without understanding the Madhyamaka system, so they become the same as the object to be proven. As it is said in the Root Verses on the Middle Way: "When emptiness is questioned, whatever fault is spoken, all of that is not a fault."
