Since other caste assemblies are actually mentioned, but this one is not, it is obvious that the venerable Chandrakirti does not approve. For those, there is also a detailed analysis. The Vigrahavyavartani and the Śūnyatāsaptati are in verse form and also have autocommentaries. The commentary on the Mūlamadhyamakakārikā called "What is to be Feared from Where" is said by some Tibetans and Indians to be an autocommentary, but this is unexamined. If it were indeed an autocommentary, then Buddhapālita and Līlāvajra and others should have explained it, and it would not be appropriate to compose separate commentaries. Those teachers should also not argue about whether the intention of the Blessed One is Svātantrika or Prāsaṅgika, because that commentary, in explaining "not made by me" and so on, agrees with Buddhapālita and explains it as the Prāsaṅgika system. Buddhapālita and Līlāvajra and others, the direct disciples of the teacher, would also become unseen, because they have made many explanations that are inconsistent with it. The venerable Chandrakirti would also become unseen, because at the end of the Prasannapadā, he only mentions Buddhapālita's commentary and Līlāvajra's good explanations, but does not mention the teacher's commentary, and the explanation of the praise is also completely inconsistent with it, and furthermore, the connection and explanation of most of the texts are only inconsistent with it. If the Prasannapadā says, "Nowadays, there is no clear doctrine anywhere." Because it was said at that time that most of Nāgārjuna's doctrines had disappeared, did those teachers not find it? If it had disappeared at that time, then it is necessary to explain the history of who found this one that exists today, and from where. The meaning of that text is that nowadays there are no beings who clearly understand Nāgārjuna's system and hold it without error, not that there are no scriptures anywhere. This is purely saying irrelevant things. If you say, the scriptures exist, but those teachers just didn't see them. Only a fool would believe this, it is a trick to deceive cunning children.

Who else would believe it? There are many other reasons that could be cited, but I will not elaborate. Therefore, it should be understood that the *Sixty Stanzas on Reasoning* and the *Root Wisdom* do not have self-commentaries. Now, this should be examined: If these Madhyamaka texts seem to only take refutation as their main task after thoroughly analyzing, then what is being refuted: appearance or imputation? What kind of scripture or reasoning is the refutation based on? For the time being, appearance is not reasonable to refute. For example, for those whose senses are impaired by cataracts, etc., as long as their senses are not free from defects, the appearance of hair-nets and double moons, etc., will not cease. Similarly, as long as ignorance that is not afflicted is not abandoned, the appearance of the six aggregates, like illusions, will not cease. Therefore, it itself cannot be refuted by reasoning. Nor is it necessary to refute it, because faults do not arise from appearance, but are generated by attachment to it. For example, just as a magician himself does not become attached to the young woman he conjures, even if there is appearance, if there is no attachment, one will not be bound. And children's attachment to the illusory young woman increases all kinds of afflictions. If appearance is refuted, then emptiness will become meaningless without substance, and the yogi who meditates on emptiness will also become nothing, because dwelling on refutation will lead to the extreme of nihilism. Therefore, only imputation should be refuted, because it is merely mental clinging, like mistaking a rope for a snake, and does not involve reality, so it can be refuted. Moreover, without refuting the object, one cannot refute the subject, which is the nature of things. As it is said in the *Pramāṇavārttika*: "Without refuting this object, one cannot abandon it." Therefore, without refuting imputation, one cannot refute the attachment to its object, and without refuting attachment, one cannot stop afflictions, because it is the root of them. Therefore, imputation is what should be refuted. That imputation which is to be refuted is also of two kinds: one is what is established even in mere convention that should be refuted, and the other is what is established in reality that should be refuted, but what is not established in convention
