Because if one speaks of meanings that are refutable, unnecessary, and contradicted by valid cognition, one would not become omniscient. Therefore, in the Root Verses of the Middle Way, it is said: "Like a dream, like an illusion, like a city of gandharvas, so is birth, so is abiding, so is destruction." And in the Entering the Middle Way, it is also said: "Therefore, the perfect Buddhas never said that there is anything at any time." This is what is said. Therefore, from those treatises, the explanation that noble Hearers and Solitary Realizers are liberated by realizing the Four Noble Truths and the sixteen aspects of impermanence, etc., is merely something conceived by oneself and does not accord with reality, so it does not contradict anything here. Furthermore, in the Ornament for Clear Realization, it is said: "In the mode of path-knowledge itself, through the door of not perceiving the aspects of the four noble truths, this Hearer's path should be known." And it is also said, "In order to abandon the conceptualization of the object of grasping, one does not abandon the grasping," etc. This is also taught for the sake of guiding those of the Hearer and Solitary Realizer lineages whose minds are not yet mature, and it is spoken from the perspective of the path that matures the mind. Otherwise, it would be contradicted by the scriptural and logical proofs mentioned earlier. Therefore, the path that matures the minds of individuals of the Hearer and Solitary Realizer lineages is the realization of the Four Noble Truths and the sixteen aspects, while the path that liberates them is solely the realization of dependent arising as devoid of inherent existence, because other paths cannot abandon self-grasping, as previously explained. Having done so, in the Queen of Sūtras, it is also said: "Those who wish to train in the Hearer's stage should also train in the Perfection of Wisdom. Those who wish to train in the Solitary Realizer's stage should also train," etc. The Venerable One (Je Tsongkhapa) also said: "Those Hearers who seek peace, you lead them to peace with omniscience," etc. This is praising the Mother (Prajñāpāramitā) by way of accomplishing the wishes of all the noble ones, and the noble Nāgārjuna also said: "Without realizing the signless, you said there is no liberation." And also: "The path of liberation that Hearers, Solitary Realizers, and Buddhas definitely rely on, you alone are, and there is definitely nothing else to be done." All these statements will be well cited.

If that's the case, then the Hearers and Solitary Realizers, having realized the selflessness of phenomena, will eliminate the obscurations to knowledge, and the distinction between the Great and Small Vehicles would also be unreasonable. If you say that, then it's not certain that they will completely eliminate the obscurations to knowledge. This is because they don't meditate on that realization of the selflessness of phenomena for more than three lifetimes or a hundred eons. And just that much is not enough to completely eliminate the obscurations to knowledge. It is by familiarizing oneself with the suchness of phenomena for countless three eons and so forth through many skillful means for the sake of others that one will abandon the two obscurations along with their imprints and attain the omniscient wisdom. As it says in the Commentary on Valid Cognition: "Through many methods in various ways, through familiarization over a long time, the faults and qualities in that will become very clear." And: "Because of familiarization, everything is abandoned." and so forth. The reason for not meditating for more than three lifetimes and so on is simply to attain the nirvana of abandoning afflictions, which is their own desired goal. And because of weak compassion, they don't seek omniscience, so they don't strive for a long time on the path for that. As it says in the Commentary on Valid Cognition: "Also because of weak compassion, there is no great effort to abide." As it is said. It's also not that they don't abandon the obscurations to knowledge at all, because they do abandon the obscurations to knowledge that are the root of the afflictions. That is, the Hearers and Solitary Realizers must also abandon the afflictive obscurations along with their causes, and the root of the afflictions, the clinging to self, is also the conceptual thought that is characterized by the manifest clinging to the aggregates as real entities, as previously explained. The Great and Small Vehicles are not distinguished by wisdom, but by the difference in skillful means such as the generation of bodhicitta, aspirations, and dedications that are directed towards all sentient beings. As it says in the Precious Garland: "In the Hearer Vehicle, the aspirations and practices of a Bodhisattva, and the dedication of all merit, are not taught. How could one become a Bodhisattva?" and so forth. Thus, the path that leads the three types of individuals to the three types of enlightenment is solely the non-conceptual wisdom of the Perfection of Wisdom. This
