Due to fears and the like, a great mass of suffering arises; when birth ceases, all of this will cease. Thus it is said. The Teacher, the Bhagavan, said in the Sutra on Dependent Arising: "Monks, when this exists, this arises; because this arises, this originates. For example, conditioned by ignorance, there is action, and so on, conditioned by birth, there arise old age and death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, distress, and agitation. Thus, only this great mass of suffering will arise." And similarly, when ignorance ceases, action ceases; when birth ceases, old age and death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, distress, and agitation cease. Thus, only this great mass of suffering will cease. All that is said and so on is shown here. Among these, from ignorance, which views the aggregates as self and belonging to self, arise meritorious, non-meritorious, and unwavering actions. From that action arises consciousness, which has the habit of action and causes rebirth. From that consciousness, name and form, which are the nature of the five aggregates in the state of being viscous and so on, arise distinctly. Among these, name is the four aggregates such as feeling, and form is the four great elements and what is transformed from the great elements that are together with it. From the growth of name and form, the six internal sense bases such as the eye arise; from those six sense bases, contact, which is the coming together of object, faculty, and consciousness, arises completely. From contact, feelings of pleasure and pain arise completely. From the basis of feeling, craving arises, which is the desire to obtain pleasure and the desire to abandon suffering. From craving, grasping arises, which is the intensified craving that engages in accepting and rejecting pleasure and pain. From that, existence arises, which is the habit of action nourished by that, becoming a powerful force for taking rebirth in the future. From that existence, future birth arises. If there is birth, there is sickness that changes the elements, there is old age that changes the years, there is death that changes the life, there is sorrow that torments the body and mind, there is [suffering] due to desires for food, clothing, and so on.

Lamenting and wailing, etc., are included, uttering sounds of sorrow and lamentation, as well as unpleasantness, etc., a very great heap of suffering arises, solely unrelated to self and what belongs to self. When ignorance ceases, actions cease, and so on. When birth ceases, all these great heaps of suffering, such as old age and death, cease. When do these twelve limbs become complete? They are completed in three lifetimes, neither more nor less. Thus, ignorance, actions, and consciousness are completed in the previous life, because they are what produce birth. Name and form up to feeling are completed in the intermediate state, because that is the nature of fruition. Craving, grasping, and existence are also completed in the intermediate state, because they arise from the causes and conditions of those fruitions. Birth and old age and death are completed in the future life, because the end of this life is existence, and birth is established from that cause and condition. From the cause and condition of birth, old age and death also arise. Among these, the first two, birth, do not necessarily arise continuously, because these present name and form may have been produced by ignorance, etc., from hundreds of eons ago. If it is the fruition of karma to be experienced after birth, then it is possible for the first two to arise continuously. The last two, however, must arise continuously, because the birth and old age and death of the future life arise from the cause and condition of existence in this life. Therefore, the birth and old age and death of this life are not a single completion of name and form and the twelve links of dependent origination in this life, because they do not arise from the causes and conditions of craving and grasping in this life. What then? It is a single completion of name and form and the twelve links of dependent origination in the previous life, because from the causes and conditions of craving, grasping, and existence of those, the birth and old age and death of this life arise. Therefore, even in this life, young children have the twelve links of dependent origination, but those are a collection of the limbs of dependent origination from the three times of past, future, and present. Among them, birth and old age and death are the dependent origination of the past. Ignorance, actions, and consciousness are the dependent origination of the future, some future births.
