Therefore, it always increases, as it is said. The extremely well-trained is the limb that prevents turning into afflictions, because it destroys the cause of afflictions, namely bad karma. It is like a nun enjoying the bliss of a king, because it is free from all obscurations. One obtains the bliss of being extremely well-trained, as it is said. Samadhi is the limb that does not turn into all afflictions, and abiding in it means changing the state. Because it accomplishes all desired meanings, it is like a householder. The wealth of what is contemplated in samadhi easily arises, as it is said. Equanimity is the nature of being free from all afflictions, because it is the nature of a non-afflictive state that is free from greed and displeasure. It is like a minister who keeps the four divisions of an army together and stays where he wants. Equanimity, at all times, stays as it pleases, as it is said. Therefore, these are the cause for attaining Nirvana, namely the accumulation of merit, which should be practiced. Secondly, as for tranquility and insight, in order to show that Nirvana is attained through the union of tranquility and insight: Without wisdom, there is no meditation; without meditation, there is no wisdom. Whoever has both of these should be sought like the ocean in a cow's footprint. It is said. Without the wisdom that knows well the individual and general characteristics of phenomena, there is no arising of meditation, because when wisdom cuts off doubts and superimpositions on the object of knowledge, the mind can be placed comfortably and evenly on the object. Without meditation, there is no wisdom that knows things as they are, because it is said that if the mind is placed evenly, one knows things as they are. The yogi who has meditation with one-pointedness of mind on the object, and the wisdom that knows things as they are, should be sought like the water in a cow's footprint, because they can quickly dry up or cross over. Wisdom here is understood as realizing the selflessness of persons and phenomena.
