Because others cannot cut off the root of existence. Wisdom without meditation cannot eradicate afflictions because it is unstable. Without wisdom, meditation only suppresses the manifestation of afflictions, but cannot eradicate the seeds. Therefore, nirvana is attained through the path of uniting calm abiding and insight. Among these, insight is more important. Calm abiding is not as important. As it is said: Those who praise, those who do not incline towards your teachings, beings blinded by ignorance, even if they reach the peak of existence, will still generate suffering and create karma. And, those who follow your teachings, even if they have not attained true meditation, can avert all existences like wearing down the eye covering of a demon. Thus it is said. Therefore, those who desire liberation should first cultivate calm abiding to the point where the mind is serviceable. After that, beginning with mindfulness, they should strive in the yoga of meditating on the two types of selflessness with the wisdom of individual discernment. If one only meditates on the abiding of the mind that is devoid of the wisdom of individual discernment, one will not even attain worldly detachment, let alone liberation. Third, abandoning what should not be thought about, one should realize dependent origination. In order to avert thinking about what should not be thought about, which becomes an obstacle to seeing the correct path to nirvana, it is said: The fourteen unelucidated questions, which the kinsman of the sun has well spoken in the world, one should not think about those, because they do not pacify the mind. Thus it is said. The fourteen unelucidated views, the kinsman of the sun, that is, the Buddha Bhagavan, has spoken of from afar, such as: the self and the world are permanent or impermanent, both permanent and impermanent, neither permanent nor impermanent, these are the four based on the past extreme. The self and the world have an end or no end, both have an end and have no end, neither have an end nor no end, these are the four based on the future extreme. The Tathagata exists or does not exist after death, both exists and does not exist, neither exists nor does not exist, these are the four based on nirvana. And, the body is the same as life, the body is different from life, these are the two based on body and life. To this

Life is a synonym for self. Why is it called unpredicted? Because some non-Buddhists asked the Tathagata, and the Tathagata knew that they were asking from the starting point of the eternal self. If he predicted permanence or impermanence, etc., he considered it unreasonable to speculate on the Dharma of distinction without a basis for distinction. If he denied the basis for distinction, saying that "self" is emptiness, he considered it meaningless. Therefore, he did not make predictions, so it is called unpredicted. Alternatively, "self" is a person who is designated based on the aggregates. The world is the five aggregates of close acquisition. Because they are interdependent, they are without inherent existence. Therefore, permanence, impermanence, etc., are not established. As it is said: "Whatever is interdependent, that is inherently peaceful." As it is said. Therefore, they should not be predicted as permanent or impermanent, etc. Considering that they are not vessels for profound meaning, and also not saying that interdependence is without inherent existence. Therefore, it is called unpredicted. As it is said: In the Ratnavali, it says: "When asked if the world has an end, the Victorious One remained silent. Because such profound Dharma is not spoken to beings who are not vessels. Therefore, the wise know that the All-Knowing One is omniscient." As it is said. Do not contemplate such views, because it is appropriate to contemplate what can be contemplated and has benefits when contemplated. But these, because there is no basis for distinction, cannot be contemplated. If contemplated, one will be seized by the snake of evil views, and the poison of afflictions will increase. Therefore, contemplating it does not pacify the mind. What can be contemplated and has the benefit of attaining peace when contemplated is interdependence. To show this, from ignorance arises action, from action arises consciousness, from consciousness arises name and form, from name and form arise the six sense sources, from the six sense sources arises contact, the Tathagata proclaimed that contact arises universally. From contact arises all feeling, from the basis of feeling arises craving, from craving arises grasping, from grasping arises existence, from existence arises birth. If there is birth, there is sorrow, old age, and the lack of desire and death.
