First, considering the common vehicle, which also has two aspects. First, showing that the Nirvana of benefit is an attainable goal. Thus, in order to generate a mind that is disgusted with the world and to cultivate Nirvana, as it is said in the verse: If a fire suddenly breaks out on your head or clothes, even abandoning the effort to put it out, strive to be without rebirth, for there is no other need of a person that is more supreme than that. It is said that if a fire suddenly breaks out on one's head or clothes, one should quickly extinguish it because it destroys life. However, the wise who know the faults of samsara, even abandoning the effort to put it out, should strive with diligence, not caring for body or life, to be without rebirth, for there is no other need of a person that is more supreme than being without rebirth. How is it that one obtains being without rebirth? In order to show that it is obtained through the three precious trainings, as it is said in the verse: Through pure morality, wisdom, and meditation, obtain the state of Nirvana, peaceful, gentle, and stainless, which does not age, does not die, and is never exhausted, separate from earth, water, fire, wind, sun, and moon. It is said that one should obtain Nirvana through morality, wisdom, and meditation, the three trainings mentioned earlier. Nirvana is of two types: with remainder and without remainder. The first is peaceful because all the contaminated aggregates have ceased. The second is stainless because both the senses are subdued and there is no defilement of afflictions, does not age because the age does not change, does not die because life does not change, and is never exhausted because it never ends. Furthermore, in order to distinguish it from some non-Buddhists, as it is said in the verse: Snow mountain, conch shell, and broad incense, buttermilk, female jewel, pearl color, the Victorious Ones have said that the shape of holding a white umbrella is liberation. Thus, in order to distinguish it from those who consider liberation to be something with form, it is said: Obtain separation from earth, water, fire, wind, sun, and moon. Second, there are seven instructions for cultivating the causes and conditions for that. First, the seven limbs of enlightenment are: Now, what will become manifest? To obtain Nirvana..."

In order to teach that transforming Dharma, mindfulness, discrimination of Dharma, diligence, joy, tranquility, samadhi, and equanimity—these seven are branches of enlightenment, a collection of virtues that attain nirvana. As it is said. Mindfulness that does not forget the object of truth at the time of the path of seeing, wisdom that thoroughly distinguishes dharmas, diligence that rejoices in virtue, joy that brings ease to the mind with that object itself, tranquility that makes body and mind workable, samadhi, and equanimity that dwells calmly without sinking or excitement—these seven are called branches of enlightenment, because they are branches of the path of seeing's enlightenment. How is the path of seeing a branch of enlightenment? As it is said in the Ornament of the Sutras: The branch of self-nature, the branch of place, the third is the branch of renunciation, the fourth is the branch of benefit, the three are the branches without affliction. As it is taught. Mindfulness is a branch of the place of the path of seeing's enlightenment, because abiding in mindfulness does not diminish the virtues through the expression of the mind. It is like a precious wheel causing those who have not fought to fight, causing those who have not realized to realize. As it is said in the Ornament: In order to conquer the knowable that has not been conquered, one should always practice mindfulness. Wisdom is the branch of self-nature, because the path of seeing's enlightenment is the nature of wisdom. It destroys the conceptualizations that grasp at persons and dharmas, like an elephant destroying an opposing army. As it is said: This destroys all the characteristics of the conceptualizations of the yogi. Diligence is the branch of renunciation, because it causes one to go as far as one should go. It quickly accomplishes direct perception, like a supreme horse quickly reaching the end of the ocean's base. As it is said: This diligence, without remainder, engages in order to quickly realize. Joy is the branch of benefit, because it makes the mind-stream peaceful. It is like the splendor of a jewel gladdening a king, because it increases the light of the Dharma, therefore joy arises.
