Outside the four gates in the four directions, there are four additional sufferings each. Thus, the first is that outside the gate there is a knee-deep pile of burning ashes. When one lifts and places one's feet there, flesh and skin, etc., arise and perish. Adjacent to that is the mud of decaying corpses, the smell of which is extremely foul. If one sinks into it, one will fall, and one's head and feet, etc., will sink in. The sharp-beaked insects living there will pierce the flesh, etc. Adjacent to that is a path filled with razors. Walking there, the flesh arises and perishes with each step. Adjacent to that is a forest of sword-leaf trees. When one sits there for shade, swords fall from the trees, cutting off limbs and causing one to fall to the ground. Dogs and jackals will pick up the remaining flesh and eat it. Adjacent to that is a forest of iron trees and winged sal trees. Going there, one is forced to climb up and down. When climbing up, the thorns face downwards. When climbing down, they face upwards, piercing the body and creating wings. The iron-beaked crows there will pluck out the eyeballs and eat them. Adjacent to that is a river called "Boundless River," filled with boiling water of ashes. If one falls into it, men holding sticks on both sides will guard it and not allow one to come out. If one does come out, one will be thrown face-up on the burning iron ground, and one's mouth will be split open with iron tongs, and burning iron liquid or molten copper will be poured in. From then on, one will experience suffering for a long time. The path filled with razors and the other four are considered one additional suffering because they resemble weapons. These become sixteen due to the differences in the four directions. As it is said in the Abhidharmakosha: "Each of the eight has sixteen additional ones: ash river, corpse mud, razor path, and other rivers." Thus it is said. Those beings born in the cold hells experience such cold suffering. Those born in the blister hells are struck by the great wind there, and their entire bodies shrink as if covered in blisters.

It becomes like that. The bursting of a water bubble is, shrinking like a water bubble bursting. 'So Tham Thampa,' 'Kyi Hur Zerwa,' and 'A Chu Zerwa' are names given to those beings because they are words spoken due to the distress of cold. Splitting like an Utpala flower is, the great wind in that place strikes, and the skins turn blue, splitting into five or six openings. Splitting like a lotus is, the skin turns red from blue, splitting into ten or more openings. Splitting like a great lotus is, the skin becomes very red, splitting into a hundred or more openings. Short-lived hell beings experience such suffering, such as the butcher's child in the king's city (Rajagriha), who is as tall as a building, crying out with dangerous sounds and coming into the sky, and the butcher's student's pile of bones emitting a foul odor, being pecked at by crows, etc., and also experiencing something like the biography of the venerable Gedun Srung It is like this: the venerable གྲོ་བཞིན་ got lost by the lake of Kyishö (སྐྱེས་མཚོའི་), wandered in the desolate plain, and gradually walked along, seeing a being at night in an immeasurable palace, enjoying the happiness of excellent divine enjoyments, and feeling happy. When dawn broke, the immeasurable palace disappeared, and the body fell to the ground, being eaten by terrifying beasts, and experiencing great suffering. After the sun set, he saw him enjoying the glory of the gods again, and asked him. 'During the day, I kill the lives of other beings, and at night, I possess the qualities of discipline. Therefore, I experience such good karmic results and sins.' Like this, then gradually walking along, during the day he enjoyed the glory of the gods, and at night he was wrapped around by a huge Rakshasa woman, who gradually ate him from the head, experiencing endless suffering. Again, during the day, he changed as before, and seeing this, he asked him as before. 'At night, I am attached to stealing, and during the day, I possess the qualities of discipline. Therefore, I experience such good karmic results and sins.' Just as it is said in the scriptures. Now, wanting to show some of the differences in the suffering of those hot hells, some are squeezed like sesame seeds, and similarly, others are ground into powder like fine flour.
