因为必定会死亡，所以您要将布施、持戒和禅修所产生的，或者身语意自性的三种福德，作为遣除恶趣黑暗的巨大明灯来点亮。如果没有福德的光明，就像孤独无助，无法被日月之光照耀一样，将会进入无法摧毁的无边恶趣黑暗之中。进入那样的黑暗时，能够成为朋友和救护，如同明灯之光一样的，唯有清净。如《广大游戏经》所说：“行善之业紧随其后，除了死后跟随而去之外，对于有为法来说没有朋友，无依无亲亦无眷属。” 第七，感受五道轮回痛苦的五种过患中，第一种是地狱的痛苦。首先，为了总体展示地狱的数量，经中说：“众生所造诸恶业，于等活、黑绳、极热等，以及众合、叫唤、无间等地狱中，恒常受苦。”意思是说，众生以身语意所造作的恶业，将在等活地狱、黑绳地狱、众合地狱、叫唤地狱、大叫唤地狱、热地狱、极热地狱、无间地狱，以及其他所有地狱，包括近边地狱和寒冷地狱中，恒常感受痛苦。其中，等活地狱是这样的：生于该处的众生互相看见时，因恐惧而拿起任何东西都会变成锋利的武器，互相投掷，肢体被砍断，昏厥倒地。这时，从空中传来声音说：“愿你们复活！”于是他们复活，像之前一样互相残杀，从而在该处遭受长久的痛苦。这样的众生被称为等活。在黑绳地狱出生的众生，狱卒会在他们的身体上画出四条或八条黑线，然后用各种武器进行切割和砍杀，从而在该处遭受长久的痛苦。这样的众生被称为黑绳。众合地狱是这样的：

Since you will surely die, you should kindle the light of merit, arising from your generosity, discipline, and meditation, or from the very nature of your body, speech, and mind, as the three kinds of virtue that dispel the great darkness of the lower realms. If there is no light of merit, like being alone and without a friend, not illuminated by the light of the sun and moon, you will enter the boundless darkness of the three lower realms, which cannot be overcome. When entering such darkness, only purity can be a friend and refuge, like the light of a lamp. As it is said in the Extensive Play Sutra: "The deeds of virtue follow after, except for those that go after death, there are no friends for conditioned things, without refuge, without relatives, and without retinue." Seventh, the first of the five faults of experiencing the definite suffering of the five destinies is the suffering of hell. For the purpose of generally showing the number of hells, it is said: "Sentient beings who commit evil deeds will always suffer in the hells of rebirth, black lines, extreme heat, crushing, screaming, and uninterrupted." This means that sentient beings who commit evil deeds with their body, speech, and mind will constantly experience suffering in the hells of rebirth, black lines, crushing, screaming, great screaming, heat, extreme heat, uninterrupted, and all the remaining hells included by these, as well as the neighboring hells and the cold hells. Among them, the hell of rebirth is such that when the sentient beings born there see each other, they are frightened and whatever they pick up turns into sharp weapons, which they throw at each other, cutting off limbs and fainting and falling to the ground. Then, a voice comes from the sky saying, "May you be revived!" Then they are revived and do as before, suffering for a long time in that place. That sentient being is called rebirth. For the sentient beings born in the black line hell, the hell guards draw four or eight black lines on their bodies and then cut and chop them with various weapons, thereby suffering for a long time in that place. That sentient being is called black line. Crushing is:

狱卒将众生聚集在一起，放入山羊和绵羊面孔等之间挤压。再次聚集时，放入铁制机器中像甘蔗一样压榨，所有门都流淌着鲜血。再次聚集时，降下铁石的冰雹击打，使其完全成为地狱。从那处境中，将长期遭受痛苦。那个众生被称为聚集摧毁。哭喊地狱是，众生寻找住所行走时，被放入铁屋中。进入后点燃火焰，燃烧并完全燃烧，被焚烧。那些众生在那里哭喊，发出可怜的声音。从那处境中，将长期遭受痛苦。那个众生被称为哭喊地狱。大哭喊地狱是，应当知晓众生处在哭喊地狱中所说的房屋那样的双重房屋中。热地狱是，地狱的狱卒用燃烧的愤怒之水在铁锅中煮众生，在燃烧的铁锅中煎炒，在燃烧的铁地上用燃烧的锤子敲打，用燃烧的铁串从臀部到头顶完全穿透，毛孔和所有门都燃烧着火焰。从那处境中，将长期遭受痛苦。那个众生被称为热地狱。极热地狱是，在先前痛苦的基础上，用三尖铁串穿透，从头顶和双肩拔出，所有门都燃烧着火焰，用燃烧的铁板缠绕身体，在燃烧的铁地上用铁钉钉住等。从那处境中，将长期遭受痛苦。那个众生被称为极热地狱。无间地狱是，从四个方向涌来的火堆，在那个众生的身体上变成一个火焰。除了发出呻吟声外，众生和火焰无法区分。因为感受痛苦没有间断和停歇，所以称为无间地狱。从那处境中，将长期遭受痛苦。那个众生被称为无间地狱。那附近的众生是，众生大地狱

The hell guardians gather beings together, squeezing them between things like the faces of goats and sheep. When gathered again, they are put into iron machines and crushed like sugarcane, with streams of blood flowing from every gate. When gathered again, they are beaten by a rain of iron boulders, completely turning them into hell. From that situation, they will suffer for a long time. That being is called the Gathering Destroyer. The Crying Hell is where, as beings seek a place to go, they are put into an iron house. Once inside, fire is set, blazing and burning completely, incinerating them. There, those beings cry out, uttering pitiful sounds. From that situation, they will suffer for a long time. That being is called the Crying Hell. The Great Crying Hell is where one should know that beings reside in a double house like the house described in the Crying Hell. The Hot Hell is where the hell guardians boil those beings in iron pots with blazing wrathful water, fry them in blazing iron pans, beat them on blazing iron ground with blazing hammers, and pierce them completely from the buttocks to the crown of the head with blazing iron skewers, with flames blazing from the pores and all gates. From that situation, they will suffer for a long time. That being is called the Hot Hell. The Very Hot Hell is where, on top of the previous suffering, they are pierced with three-pronged iron skewers, pulled out from the crown of the head and both shoulders, with flames blazing from all gates, the body is wrapped with blazing iron sheets, and they are nailed to the blazing iron ground with iron nails, and so on. From that situation, they will suffer for a long time. That being is called the Very Hot Hell. The Uninterrupted Hell is where piles of fire come from the four directions, turning into a single flame on that being's body. Except for uttering groans, the being and the flame become indistinguishable. Because there is no interruption or cessation in experiencing suffering, it is called the Uninterrupted Hell. From that situation, they will suffer for a long time. That being is called the Uninterrupted Hell. Those nearby are the beings in the great hell.
