The enemy of birth, that is, because he met Devadatta, a sinful friend, he committed many sins, such as killing the king who possessed the father's Dharma. Later, he gained faith in the teacher, and thus was liberated from the fruits of sin. The Bhagavan prophesied that he was the best of the faithful lay practitioners. The maker of happiness was prevented by his mother from going to seduce another's wife, so he killed his mother. After ordaining, he learned that he had committed an unforgivable crime, and the Sangha expelled him. He went to the borderlands, built a monastery, and lived there. Relying on him, many naturally abiding monks gathered together. He became the abbot of the Sangha and managed the Sangha according to the Dharma. After his life ended, due to the ripening of the unforgivable crime, he was born in hell, like hitting a hollow pillar. After that, after dying, he was born in the heavens and obtained the fruit of entering the stream in the presence of the Bhagavan. Fifth, one should abide in patience. Because householders have a lot of anger due to many unpleasant things falling on their heads. In order to turn away from that and show the merits of patience, it is said: There is no asceticism like patience, do not give anger any opportunity. By abandoning anger, one can obtain the state of non-retrogression, which is promised by the Buddha himself. It means that patience is not being angry at harm, and even if anger arises, it does not continue. There is no other asceticism equal to it, so it alone is the best of asceticism. Entering fire and water, eating roots and fruits, wearing bark and leaves, etc., are merely tormenting the body. If one cannot even obtain higher realms from those actions, what to speak of liberation? Therefore, those are not asceticism. Because patience has such great benefits, you should not give the slightest opportunity to anger, the opposite of the king of asceticism. By cultivating patience and abandoning anger, one can obtain the state of non-retrogression in the desire realm, because this is promised by the Buddha himself. As it is said in the sutras: Monks, like this, abandon anger! You are the yoke of non-retrogression. It is said like this. For the desire for anger and desire, the desire

is the cause of anger. Even without abandoning the desire for sensual pleasures, one cannot eliminate anger. Therefore, it is said that abandoning anger leads to transcendence of desire. Thus, from the very beginning, one should not give anger a chance. Even if anger arises, it should be immediately pacified and not harbored. To illustrate this, it is said: "He has reviled me, he has struck me, he has defeated me, he has robbed me of my wealth." Holding grudges creates quarrels, and completely abandoning grudges leads to peaceful sleep. Therefore, one should not give anger any opportunity. Because, I have been reviled by this person with harsh words. This person has struck me with sticks and other things. This person has defeated me with power. This person has robbed me of my wealth. Holding onto these signs of harm, harboring grudges leads to the creation of quarrels and suffering through the misdeeds of body and speech. Therefore, by completely abandoning such grudges, one is free from mental suffering and can sleep peacefully, so one should strive to abandon grudges. In the *Bodhicharyavatara*, it is also said: "In short, there is no happiness with anger; no one can find happiness through anger." And: "Whoever strives to subdue anger, will be happy in this life and the next." As it is said. Sixth, the advice to abandon the inferior conduct of the three doors (body, speech, and mind) and to train in goodness. Because for ordinary beings, virtuous and non-virtuous minds arise mixed together, virtuous minds should be made stable, and non-virtuous minds should be made unstable. To illustrate this, it is said: "The mind is like drawings on water, earth, and stone; one should understand it as such. Among these, for those with afflictions, the first is best; for those who desire Dharma, the last is excellent." In the categories of sentient beings, there are differences in the stability and instability of the mind's activity. Just as drawing on water, drawing on earth, and drawing on stone, one should understand these three aspects. Among these, for the afflicted mind, the first, the instability like drawing on water, is the best. For those who desire Dharma, that is, for virtuous minds, the last, the stability like drawing on stone, is the best.
