And, the merit of the present life, in this life, one will also gain the reputation of good name; the merit of the next life, in the next life, one can also attain the heavens in various ways, therefore, those who live at home should strive to serve their parents. This is (the above content). Second, one should abide in the upavāsa: It is difficult for those who live at home to practice celibacy at all times, in order to coordinate with the one-day and one-night celibacy, in order to explain the eight-limbed upavāsa. Killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, lying, etc., alcohol and untimely food, attachment to high beds, and the distinctions of songs, dances, and garlands should all be abandoned, following the precepts of the Arhats, possessing these eight limbs, the upavāsa can grant men and women, the desired bodies of the desire realm gods. Thus it is said, killing is taking life, stealing is taking what is not given, sexual misconduct is impure conduct, lying is speaking falsehood, grain alcohol and places that cause intoxication and carelessness, untimely food, tall beds, exceeding the measure of a cubit for beds and stools, songs, dances, and the distinctions of incense and garlands except for healing illnesses, through abandoning these for one day and one night, following the precepts of the Arhats of the past, these eight limbs are called upavāsa. Its fruition is that in the next life it can grant the desired bodies of the six desire realm gods who enjoy the desire realm. To whom does it grant? It grants to the men and women of Jambudvipa who possess this precept, because others do not have the Pratimoksha vows. The vows of upavāsa are summarized by five limbs: Thus, the limb of abandoning harm to others and truly taking it up; the limb of abandoning harm to oneself and others and truly taking it up; the limb of restoring what has been lost from truly taking it up; regarding this, abandoning harm to the life and possessions of others; in order to prevent the loss of what has been truly taken up, the limb of establishing mindfulness closely; and the limb of not allowing mindfulness to become obscured. Among them, abandoning harm to the life and possessions of others is the first limb.

The abandonment of impure conduct is the second branch. Thus, having abandoned it, one does not rely on one's own wife, so it does not harm oneself, and one does not rely on another's wife, so it does not harm others. The abandonment of false speech is the third branch. The abandonment of the three places other than the abandonment of intoxication is the fourth branch. Thus, one constantly relies on dancing, singing, the sound of music, incense, garlands, high beds, and untimely food. When one sees oneself in solitude for a moment, one thinks, "I will observe the Uposatha with the Uposatha." Therefore, one's mindfulness is always present. The abandonment of intoxication is the fifth branch. Thus, even though one thinks, "I am abiding with mindfulness," that branch is intoxicated and deluded by the intoxication of alcohol, and one engages involuntarily. Why is the abandonment of taking gold and silver not established as a branch in the precepts of the lay practitioner, but the abandonment of it is established as a branch in the precepts of the novice monk? The novice monk abides in the direction of renunciation. For renunciates, two places are very unseemly and inconsistent with discipline: falling to the extreme of sensual pleasures, striving for the joy of play and acting as one pleases, and the enjoyment of accumulation. Among these, in order to abandon the first place that is inconsistent with discipline, the abandonment is established from dancing, singing, the sound of music, etc., up to untimely food. In order to abandon the second place that is inconsistent with discipline, the abandonment of taking gold and silver is established, because gold and silver are the root and main thing of all accumulation. For those in the household life, the fault is not so great, and there is no inconsistency with discipline, so the abandonment of taking gold and silver is not established as a branch of the lay practitioner. Why is it that dancing, singing, the sound of music, and the holding of incense, garlands, and ointments are established as one branch in the precepts of the lay practitioner, but for the novice monk, they are made into two branches and established? For a householder, if one violates that in any way, one only confesses one fault, two
