It is the field of suffering, the Dharma speakers, and the parents and other virtuous friends, which are the fields of benefit. Therefore, offering to them, and wishing to give help, one should give alms in a proper manner, that is, with respect. Because such alms will produce great fruits in the future. In the next life, there is no better supreme friend who can bring great benefits than alms. As it is said in the *Entering the Middle Way*: "If a person's foot of discipline is broken, even if he is rich in generosity, he will fall into evil destinies. Since the root with interest is completely exhausted, he will have no enjoyment in the future." As it is said, the result of alms without discipline is that one enjoys it in the body of hell, therefore, for the sake of the fruits of the next life, one does not give other alms, therefore, it itself will be interrupted. If the qualities and discipline increase in the field, the enjoyment of the fruits will not be interrupted. As it is said, alms with discipline will produce great fruits and enjoyment in the bodies of gods and humans. There, also, because of giving other alms with discipline, the enjoyment of the vast ripening fruits will not be interrupted in other lives. Therefore, in order not to waste other merits such as alms, the advice is to protect its foundation—discipline, that is: You should keep the precepts that are not degenerated, not high, not mixed, and not defiled. Discipline is like the land of seeds and non-seeds, and is said to be the foundation and basis of all virtues. As it is said, connect "You should keep the precepts." What kind of difference is there? Because it does not exceed one precept that is properly taken, it is not degenerated; because it does not exceed many, it is not high; because it is not mixed with unwholesome thoughts, it is not mixed; because it is not dedicated for survival and enjoyment, it is not defiled; because the discipline itself will not become other forms, it is not stained. Such a discipline with virtues is free because it is liberated from the slavery of existence, therefore, such a discipline is also praised by the wise and noble ones, and it is also a method of practicing meditation, because discipline
