If they are different, then the assertion that everything is of the nature of a lord is contradictory. It is also not born from its own nature, because it would then follow that it does not depend on causes and conditions, and it is not reasonable for self-nature to depend on others. Furthermore, materialists and others say: "Subtle and inconceivable, extremely thin, doing all, knowing all. The object of meditation for meditators with wisdom attained through the habit of yoga. The bodies of the sun, moon, earth, water, fire, wind, directions, and space. Those who wish to achieve peaceful bliss and joy should always meditate on the Lord." It is also not the case that things arise from a permanent lord with such qualities as described, because if a permanent entity produces results without depending on anything else, it would follow that everything arises simultaneously. If it arises gradually depending on the will of the lord, then the will arises from a cause different from the lord, which contradicts the assertion that everything is done by the lord. If it arises from the lord, then that too would arise simultaneously. If the will depends on something else, then it would follow that there is no end. Therefore, it does not arise from dissimilar causes, nor does it arise from no cause, because it would then follow that it is either always present or never present. So, from what does it arise? For example, just as a sprout manifests from a flawless seed covered with soil and fertilizer when moistened with water, similarly, a sprout of rebirth manifests from a powerful seed of karma covered with ignorance when moistened with craving. Therefore, it is said in the Suhrllekha: "Know, O wise one, that it arises from ignorance, karma, and craving." Third, abandoning the three combinations of obstacles: Those who wish to be liberated from samsara must abandon the causes of rebirth as described above. So, how should they be abandoned? It is said in the Suhrllekha: "Holding vows and asceticism as supreme, distorted views of oneself, and doubt—know these three combinations to be the bolts on the city gate of liberation." This means that holding vows and asceticism that follow wrong views as the cause of purification and liberation is holding vows and asceticism as supreme. And the distorted view of oneself, that is, of the five aggregates of appropriation, as self and belonging to self. That is, the aggregate of decay.

These three, namely, views about the ground, and doubt and hesitation that consume the mind regarding liberation and the path to liberation, are universal bonds. For example, just as not wanting to go, relying on the wrong path, and doubting the correct path are obstacles to reaching the desired destination, similarly, by clinging to bad views as the self, one does not want to attain liberation without such views; by considering discipline and asceticism as supreme, one relies on the wrong path to liberation; and by being indecisive, one doubts the correct path. Know that these obstruct the gate to the city of liberation, so abandon them. Fourth, training in the three trainings that are conducive conditions. Now, how can one be a help in freeing oneself from such obscurations? To this question, since there is no external help, it depends entirely on one's own mind, so to show this, it is said: Liberation depends on oneself; for this, there is no external help. Therefore, possessing listening, discipline, and meditation, strive for the four noble truths. It means that liberation is nothing other than the mind being freed from the bonds of afflictions. This depends on oneself becoming accustomed to the methods of liberation; for this, no other person can provide help, so one must strive oneself. So, what are the methods of liberation? As it is said: Abiding in discipline, possessing listening and thinking, one should diligently engage in meditation. As it is said, first, abiding in any one of the seven types of individual liberation vows, which are sustained by a mind that is certain to arise, one should properly listen to and contemplate the scriptures that are in accordance with the truth. With meditation that focuses single-pointedly on the meaning of what has been heard, focusing on the four noble truths such as suffering, one should strive to meditate on their conventional truth, the sixteen aspects such as impermanence, and on their ultimate truth, emptiness that is free from all extremes of elaboration. This shows that the three precious trainings themselves are the methods of liberation, and to show that all trainings are included within them, it is said: One should always train in higher discipline, higher wisdom, and higher mind. The one hundred and fifty-one trainings are completely contained within these three.
