Even suffering and so on. But how is there no self? If there is no self, then who will experience the results of good and bad karma? (It is said in the sutra) that form is not self, that is, the self is not associated with form, the self does not dwell in form, form does not dwell in the self, and similarly, the other four aggregates should also be realized as emptiness. If there is a self, does the self exist in the nature of the aggregates such as form, or does it exist in something different from them? The first case is impossible, because the sutra says, "Form is not self"... up to "consciousness is not self." This is a quotation for the moment. What is the reasoning here? The self cannot be the nature of form, etc., because like form, etc., the self would also be impermanent and multiple. Moreover, since form, etc., are considered to be real, the self would also become real. And since the view of self is based on a real object, this would lead to the impossibility of the antidote cutting off the seed of inverted views. As it is said in the "Entering the Middle Way": If the aggregates were the self, then since the aggregates are many, the self would also become many. The self is real, and such a view, based on reality, therefore does not become inverted. If (the self) is different from form, etc., then is it associated with form, etc., like Devadatta possessing a cow, or does it dwell in form, etc., like Devadatta sitting on a reed mat, or do form, etc., rely on it like vines, etc., rely on the earth? The first case is impossible, because (the sutra) says, "The self is not associated with form"... up to "is not associated with consciousness." This is a quotation from the scriptures. The reasoning is: just as Devadatta possesses a cow that can be controlled, it is impossible for me to possess form, etc., that can be controlled, because even if I don't want to, form, etc., will become different and different, and destruction, etc., will be seen. The second case is also impossible, because (the sutra) says, "The self does not dwell in form"... up to "the self does not dwell in consciousness." This is a quotation from the scriptures. The reasoning is: just as Devadatta dwells on a reed mat, the self does not dwell on form, etc., in a way that depends on them, because the dependent form, etc., do not...

Because the permanent "self" would also become impermanent. The third case is also not true, because the sutra says that form does not exist in the "self," up to form does not exist in "consciousness." This is the scripture. The reasoning is: just as vines and so on rely on the earth, the skandhas such as form do not rely on the "self," because if form and so on rely on the permanent "self," then form and so on will never be destroyed. If their arising and ceasing depend on the "self," that is also not correct, because form outside of the "self" also arises and ceases. The analysis of form is like this, and for the remaining four skandhas such as feeling, one should also understand their essence and emptiness from a self different from "I" with the scriptures and reasoning mentioned above. Contrary to what was said above, viewing each of the five skandhas such as form in four ways is what the sutra calls "the twenty branches of the view of the aggregates of destruction," and its antidote is "form is not self," and so on. Now, in order to explain that the skandhas arise from conforming causes and conditions by abandoning causelessness and incompatible causes, it is said: Skandhas are not from free will, not from time, not from nature, not from self-nature, not from power, not from causelessness, but arise from fire, knowledge, karma, and desire, so the treasury of wisdom says. It means that the skandhas such as form are not independent of others, but arise freely, as if falling from the sky, because it can be observed that they arise and cease with the presence or absence of their respective definite causes and conditions. Some say: Time ripens all things, time gathers beings, time awakens sleep, time is difficult to overcome. They believe that all things arise from a permanent time, which is also incorrect, because time cannot be observed apart from things such as form, and things arising from a permanent time would arise and cease simultaneously. The Samkhya school believes that things evolve from a permanent nature in which the three components of dust, darkness, and mental power are balanced, which is also incorrect. If nature and evolution are one, then nature will also be impermanent like evolution.
