Through cultivation, Nirvana will be attained. If Nirvana is not attained, how to proceed further? Even without attaining Nirvana, one can attain happiness beyond desire in the realm of form, such as the first Dhyana of the Brahma world. By cultivating these Dhyanas, one will experience the flawless, peaceful Dhyana that is free from the torment of anger. Therefore, loving-kindness and so on are explained in this treatise as the means of generating Dhyana. Fourth, cultivating the four Dhyanas: Although the four Dhyanas can be attained by cultivating loving-kindness and so on, what will be the result of these Dhyanas? Having abandoned desire, enjoyment, joy, happiness, and suffering, Through the four Dhyanas, one obtains Brahma, clear light, increasing virtue, And equal share with the great fruit gods. As it is said, with the antidote branch of investigation and analysis, abandon desire and enjoyment, that is, the desire for desire; joy and happiness born from abandoning harm and solitude; having a one-pointed mind with bliss is the first Dhyana; with the antidote branch of inner pure faith, abandon analysis; joy and happiness born from Samadhi; having a one-pointed mind with bliss is the second Dhyana; with the antidote branch of mindfulness, awareness, and equanimity, abandon joy and happiness, having a one-pointed mind with bliss is the third Dhyana; with the antidote branch of mindfulness and pure equanimity, abandon happiness and suffering, having a one-pointed mind with the feeling of equanimity is the fourth Dhyana. Thus, by cultivating the four Samadhi Dhyanas as the cause, one obtains birth equal to that of the Great Brahma, the Clear Light God, the Increasing Virtue God, and the Great Fruit God, in that order. This refers to the main aspects. In detail, by fully cultivating the small, medium, and large first Dhyanas, one is born into the Brahma Assembly, the Brahma Retinue, and the Great Brahma, in that order. By cultivating the small, medium, and large fourth Dhyanas, one is born into the Lesser Virtue God, the Immeasurable Virtue God, and the All-Pervading Virtue God, and so on. Fifth, how to adopt and abandon virtue and non-virtue based on the distinction between heavy and light deeds: Constant and clinging, and without antidote, possessing qualities, born from the root

Sa. Virtuous and non-virtuous actions are of five great types; therefore, strive to engage in virtuous deeds. It is said that any virtuous or non-virtuous action that possesses five distinctions is called great because it produces definite and numerous results. What are these? They are the distinctions of application, intention, antidote, and basis. Among these, the distinctions of application are that the action is performed constantly. The distinctions of intention are that it is performed with strong manifestation of afflictions and great joy, etc. The distinctions of antidote are that the action has no destructive antidote. The distinctions of basis are of two types: the basis of benefit is parents and Dharma speakers, and especially the objects of benefit as described in the Jataka tales of bears and monkeys, etc. The basis that primarily possesses qualities is the Three Jewels and those who arise from cessation, etc. The results arising from benefiting or harming them are greater than the distinctions of basis. Therefore, you should abandon great non-virtue and strive to engage in great virtue. If you engage in much non-virtue and little virtue, do not be unafraid; if you do the opposite, do not be too afraid either. To illustrate this, it is said: A few grains of salt can change the taste of a little water, but not the Ganges River. Similarly, even a small sinful action can produce results if the root of virtue is small and little; know that it cannot produce results if it is vast, i.e., large and numerous, and strive to accumulate great and powerful virtue. Sixth, abandoning the five obscurations: To show that these five qualities, such as agitation, are the opponents of meditation and liberation, etc., one should strive to abandon them. It is said: Agitation and regret, as well as malice and drowsiness, sleep and desire, as well as doubt, know that these five obscurations are thieves who steal the wealth of virtue. It is said: The mind is focused on a lovely object

Distraction of agitation, regret of being disheartened by actions of having done evil, aversion of being disturbed from within the mind towards objects of all tormented thoughts, lethargy which makes body and mind unsuitable through shrinking in the mind, and sleep which draws inwards involuntarily relying on the cause of sleep, desire for cravings such as food and sexual intercourse, and doubt which is of two minds towards liberation and the path of liberation. These are called the five obscurations because they obscure meditation and liberation, etc., or the three trainings. Know that these are thieves who steal the wealth of virtue, and please abandon them. Among these, agitation and regret are similar in being unsteady, and lethargy and sleep are similar in being dull, so they are each placed as one obscuration. Or, if one wishes according to the Treasury [Abhidharmakosa], the obscurations are dissimilar, and because food and activity are the same, like it is said "two are one". The first two (agitation and regret) arise from causes such as thoughts of relatives, and are similar in causing the mind to be scattered, and are destroyed by calm abiding, so they are placed as one. The latter two (lethargy and sleep) also arise from causes such as not moderating food, and cause the mind to shrink, and are destroyed by the perception of light, so they are placed as one. Why are there only five obscurations? Because they harm the three trainings. For example, craving and aversion harm higher discipline. According to their order, due to the power of craving, one does not initially take the precepts correctly, and after taking them, when others encourage learning, one does not practice well according to the Dharma due to the power of torment. Lethargy and sleep harm higher mind, because when meditating on the reasons for calm abiding, they cause the mind to shrink inwards. Agitation and regret harm higher wisdom, because when meditating on the reasons for superior seeing, they cause one to be distracted outwards. Doubt harms both, because when meditating on the reasons for equanimity of the union of calm abiding and superior seeing, if one is doubtful and not certain, then...
