Like beneficial medicine, food is also a remedy for the disease of hunger, neither too much nor too little, but in moderation. It should be consumed with mindfulness and awareness, without greed or hatred. The way of consuming should also be avoided: do not eat excessively in order to become strong, causing physical and verbal recklessness, and increasing happiness and afflictions; do not be arrogant in order to increase physical strength and harm enemies; do not indulge in pleasure in order to grow limbs, but eat only to let the body be a support for accomplishing virtuous deeds. Among them, eating for the sake of being full and indulging in pleasure is caused by greed; eating for the sake of arrogance is caused by hatred. Second, the method of not sleeping at the beginning and end of the night is: "The body of reason pervades the day, Recite the beginning and end of the night, Even when sleeping, it is not in vain, Sleep with mindfulness in between." As it is said, the body of reason, that is, filling the whole day with actions of good nature, dividing the night into three periods, reciting the beginning and end periods of the night, that is, passing through. Sleep in the middle period between the beginning and end periods of the night, and do not waste time when sleeping. In order not to make sleep meaningless, sleep for a while, nourish the body and mind, and then quickly get up and do good deeds. You should go to sleep with such mindfulness and awareness. In this way, sleep will also be transformed into virtuous deeds by the power of motivation, so sleep will also become meaningful. Just as the Blessed One said: "In the first period of the night, through walking and meditation, the mind is completely purified from the dharmas that will be obscured. After complete purification, in the middle period, wash your feet outside the monastery, enter the monastery, lie down on your right side, cross your legs, maintain mindfulness and awareness, and sleep like a lion. In the last period, get up quickly and purify your mind from the dharmas that will be obscured through walking and meditation." It's like this. Third, cultivate the four immeasurables: After making body and mind capable in this way, enter into meditation.

Therefore, one should meditate on the four immeasurables. As it is said: Love and compassion, joy and equanimity, one should always cultivate correctly. Even if one does not attain the higher realms, one will still obtain the bliss of the Brahma realm. As it is said, focusing on all sentient beings, love that desires happiness, compassion that desires freedom from suffering, joy that brings happiness and contentment, and equanimity that is impartial without attachment or aversion—these four, because they focus on limitless sentient beings as their object and generate limitless merit for the meditator, you should cultivate them correctly. These also have three aspects based on the difference in the object of focus: focusing on sentient beings, focusing on phenomena, and having no focus. The first is to grasp sentient beings as truly existent, not merely aggregates, and to have the aspect of desiring such sentient beings to be free from suffering, etc. The second is to realize the absence of self in persons, and to impute sentient beings merely to the aggregates of phenomena, having the aspect of desiring them to be free from suffering. The third is to realize the absence of self in phenomena, having the aspect of desiring illusory sentient beings to be free from suffering, etc. The first is for ordinary beings. The second is for the Hearers, Solitary Realizers, and noble ones. The third is for the noble ones of the Great Vehicle. As Hearers and Solitary Realizers have realization of the absence of self in phenomena, the latter two are possessed by all the noble ones of the three vehicles, existing as one essence with different emphases. The method of cultivation is that for the first three, one divides them into three sides: friends, neutral parties, and enemies. First, one focuses on the side of friends such as parents, cultivating the aspect of desiring them to have happiness, etc. After that, one focuses on the neutral parties, and finally on the side of enemies. When the sides of friends and enemies have become equal in desiring to have happiness, etc., then the cultivation is complete. Equanimity is first cultivated towards ordinary people, and finally cultivated until everything, both pleasant and unpleasant, is equal. What will be the result of cultivating in this way? Love and the others are encompassed by the wisdom of the two kinds of selflessness.
