Because worldly people consider even non-dharma as dharma, in order to prevent this, it is said, "You should not commit sins for the sake of Brahmins, monks, gods, guests, parents, children, or consorts, or even for the sake of your retinue, because no one can share the ripening of hell." This means that one should not commit sins for the sake of other sentient beings from Brahmins to retinue, because the result of sin will ripen in hell, and it must be endured by oneself alone, so no one can share and bear the suffering of Brahmins and others. If the ripening result of sin is unpleasant, why does it not ripen immediately? There are three types of karma: karma to be experienced in this life, karma to be experienced after birth, and karma to be experienced at an uncertain time. The first is when the result ripens in the very life in which the karma was created, such as the Jataka tales of the bear and the deer king Ruru. The second is when it ripens in the next life, such as the five heinous crimes. The third is when it ripens from the second life onwards. Here, with regard to karma to be experienced after birth, it is said, "No matter what kind of evil deeds are committed, they will not be cut off immediately like a sword, but when death comes, the result of evil deeds will appear." This means that committing evil deeds will not immediately cut off and cause pain like a sword touching the body, but when death comes, the signs of suffering from regret, and the torment of Yama's messengers in an unpleasant way, etc., the result of evil deeds will appear and be known. As it is said in the Bodhicharyavatara, "Afflicted by sorrow, the face is haggard and swollen, tears flow from the eyes, relatives have lost all hope, and can only look at the face of Yama's messengers. Suffering from remembering one's own sins, and hearing the sounds of hell, incontinence due to fear, what can one do when one is unconscious?" Just as it is said (in the Bodhicharyavatara). Fourth, to make (oneself) possess the wealth of the noble ones, like that.

Separating from worldly dharmas, intending to establish in noble dharma, faith, discipline, generosity, and listening, stainless shame, modesty, and wisdom, the Buddha declared are the seven noble riches, understand that other common riches are meaningless. Thus it is said, having complete faith and joy in karma and its results, the truth, and the Three Jewels, is faith; abandoning faults and properly upholding discipline; giving away possessions with the desire to make offerings and benefit others; listening to the holy dharma that accords with liberation with the intention of omniscience, and without the defilement of desiring gain, respect, and fame. Having such discipline and listening, thinking that one should not commit evil, being ashamed to commit faults in relation to oneself is knowing shame; committing evil deeds is condemned in both dharma and the world, thinking that if others hear that I have committed evil, I will be rebuked, being ashamed to commit faults in relation to others is being modest; the wisdom that distinguishes the self and common characteristics of all dharmas. These seven dharmas are the seven noble riches spoken of by the Buddha, being the cause of uncontaminated bliss, and being unique. Gold and other common riches that are known in the world are not the cause of pacifying afflictions, and are common, meaningless, and should be understood as accumulating and wasting, and as false deception. Fifth, abandoning the obstacles to the noble riches, having explained accumulating noble riches, in order to explain the method of not wasting them, gambling and playing, watching gatherings, laziness, relying on evil friends, drinking alcohol, wandering at night lead to bad rebirths, the cause of the decline of fame, these six should be abandoned. Thus it is said, gambling with dice and the like, watching the majority of people gathered at celebrations and the like, laziness that does not rejoice in virtue, evil friends with whom association increases non-virtue, drinking alcohol, wandering in houses and other villages at night, these six are the cause of falling into bad rebirths in the future, and are also the cause of the decline of fame in this life, so they should be abandoned. Relying on these will...
