Whoever has the notion of self, at that very moment has self-grasping. From self-grasping, karma is produced again, and from karma, one turns again into samsara. So it is said. By realizing the emptiness of phenomena such as form, which are interdependent, as described above, in a way that is inexpressible, all afflictions and conceptualizations are abandoned, and liberation is attained. Furthermore, it is said in that very text: "Since it is not found in oneself, in others, or in the three times, the grasping of self is reversed, and then karma and birth as well." So it is said. The suchness of the phenomena described above is also called selflessness. From realizing that, there is no way to attain liberation through other means. If that is realized, all views of clinging to extremes will be destroyed. Therefore, the Middle Way is also that. Other than the Buddha, deities such as Ishvara and Vishnu do not have the ability to teach that. It is also said: In the Four Hundred Stanzas: "That which has no second door to peace, destroys all wrong views, and is the realm of the Buddhas, is called selflessness." So it is said. The means of realizing such emptiness is also to realize that these conventional phenomena, such as form, arise dependently and are merely the nature of these conditions. Otherwise, one will fall into either the extreme of permanence or annihilation. It is also said in the sutra: "That which is born from conditions is unborn. It does not have the nature of birth. That which depends on conditions is said to be empty. Whoever knows emptiness is mindful." So it is said. That interdependence should also be understood by negating the four extremes of arising. The teacher, in praising the Middle Way, said: "Suffering is made by oneself, made by others, and made by both. The causeless ones assert it. You say it arises dependently." And: "A sprout does not arise from a seed that is destroyed or not destroyed. You say that all arising is like the appearance of an illusion." So it is said. In this regard, things do not arise from themselves, because it is contradictory for oneself to act on oneself, and because arising would be meaningless and would entail infinity. Nor do they arise from others, because everything would arise from everything.

Because even incompatible things would become cause and effect. It is also not from both, because both faults would occur, and because they are contradictory. It is also not from no cause, because it would become either permanent or non-existent, and striving for the cause for the sake of the result would become meaningless. Therefore, things are free from the four extremes of arising and ceasing, and arise depending on just this cause and condition. And that itself is the antidote to all views of clinging to extremes, which is called the Middle Way of dependent arising. As it is said in the Root of the Middle Way: "Whatever is dependently arisen, that is explained as emptiness. That is dependently designated, that itself is the Middle Way." Therefore, there is no view higher than understanding dependent arising. However, because this is very difficult to understand, one should become familiar with the treatises of the Middle Way for a long time in order to understand it. The meditation of proper attention is to thoroughly analyze with the wisdom of hearing and thinking that things are dependently arisen, free from all extremes of elaboration, and to repeatedly familiarize oneself with that meaning. As it is said in the Sixty Stanzas of Reasoning: "Those who have completely transcended and do not abide in existence and non-existence, they should meditate on the meaning of dependent arising, which is profound and without characteristics." Therefore, merely stopping conceptual thoughts without the wisdom of analyzing the nature of dependent arising, and both meditations that are seized by views that cling to any extreme such as existence or non-existence, are not correct meditations. As mentioned before, meditation that is seized by the wisdom of analyzing the meaning of dependent arising is proper attention, and is the meditation of the Perfection of Wisdom. Second, in passing, praise of wisdom and ethics. Now, in order to generate respect for the wisdom with the correct object just mentioned, I will express praise for it. As it is said: "Even those who have good lineage, form, and learning, if they lack wisdom and ethics, are not worthy of respect. Therefore, whoever possesses these two qualities, even if they lack other qualities, should be revered." This means that a person of noble lineage, with a beautiful form,

Those who are well-versed in other treatises, if they lack the wisdom to realize the true nature and the discipline to abandon immoral conduct, are not worthy of honor and respect, because they do not have the virtues of a noble person. Therefore, whoever possesses these two virtues of wisdom and discipline, even if they lack other virtues such as lineage, appearance, etc., should be offered to and respected, because they possess the virtues of a noble person. Possessing discipline, one will not engage in unwholesome deeds, and possessing correct wisdom, one will engage in wholesome deeds. Not engaging in the unwholesome deeds of non-noble people, but engaging in the wholesome deeds of noble people, is why one is counted among the noble people. Third, one should turn away from worldly dharmas. For those who abide in the eight worldly dharmas, the noble path does not arise. In order to be in harmony with the arising of the noble path, it is taught that one should be equanimous towards the eight worldly dharmas. The worldly wise one knows gain and loss, pleasure and pain, praise and blame, fame and disrepute, these eight worldly dharmas, please be equanimous and do not let them be the object of my mind. It is said that because one is well-versed in the good customs of the world, the king is called the worldly wise one. Experiencing the pleasure of comfort and the pain of discomfort in gaining and not gaining possessions, hearing pleasant and unpleasant things, being praised in person and slandered behind one's back, and so on, the mind becomes happy and unhappy. This is the same as worldly people, so it is called the eight worldly dharmas. In order for you to transcend the world, please be equanimous towards these things, and do not let them be the object of your mind's happiness and unhappiness. Do not be unhappy because of not gaining, etc., and do not be happy because of gaining, etc. The mind's happiness and unhappiness, etc., which are directed towards gaining, etc., are worldly dharmas, but not gaining, etc., themselves, because even noble beings possess gaining, etc. Therefore, it is because of the object that it is established as the eight worldly dharmas. Even if one commits sins for the sake of the lama and Brahmins, it will not become non-dharma.
