As it is said, "Enjoyment will be without interruption." As it is said, with the giving that is endowed with morality, great fruits of enjoyment will arise in the abodes of gods and humans. Moreover, by giving other gifts that are upheld by morality, in other lifetimes, the enjoyment of vast ripening will be continuous and without interruption. Therefore, in order not to waste other merits such as giving, the advice to protect its basis, morality, is: You should maintain the precepts, not diminished, nor arrogant, unmixed, undefiled, and pure. As it is said, "Precepts are like the earth for the moving and unmoving, they are the foundation of all virtues." Thus it is said, connect it by saying, "You should maintain the precepts." What kind of distinction is there? Because it does not transgress even a single basis of training that has been properly taken, it is not diminished; because it does not transgress many, it is not arrogant; because it is not mixed with non-virtuous thoughts, it is unmixed; because it is not dedicated for the sake of existence and enjoyment, it is undefiled; because the precepts themselves do not change into other forms, they are unsoiled. Such precepts, endowed with such qualities, are independent because they are liberated from the bondage of existence, and therefore these precepts are also praised by the wise and noble ones, and are also the practice of samadhi, because with precepts, the mind is placed in equanimity. Or, as it is said in the Treasury of Knowledge, "The cause of broken precepts does not arise, it relies on the antidote and peace." Thus, this shows that precepts have four qualities, as follows: not defiled by the faults of broken precepts, therefore not diminished; its cause is not defiled by afflictions, therefore not arrogant; relying on the antidote to afflictions, such as contemplating ugliness, therefore unmixed; held by the thought of peaceful nirvana, therefore undefiled. What are the benefits of maintaining such precepts? Just as the basis of all that moves and does not move is the earth, so too, precepts are the basis of all worldly and transworldly virtues such as samadhi and wisdom, therefore it is said, because one possesses precepts, there will be no regret and so on, and gradually one will attain samadhi, and the mind will be equal.
