It should be understood that abstaining from killing, etc., are the ten paths of virtuous actions. Alcohol is the root of all non-virtue, because its faults are great, and it is a transgression that has been proscribed, it is not included among the paths of action, therefore one should abstain from alcohol, and one should rely on a correct livelihood. As it is said: "Turn away from all intoxicants, likewise, be virtuous, and also be exceedingly pleased with virtuous livelihoods." Because it is a place of heedlessness, one should turn away in every way from all alcohol that is mixed with grains and concocted, and one should also be exceedingly pleased with virtuous livelihoods such as food and drink that do not harm others and do not become a cause of heedlessness. Thus, abiding in the path of virtue, in order to show that one should give alms as if giving away jewels, it is said: "Knowing that possessions are fleeting and without essence, give alms to monks, Brahmins, the poor, and friends. Bestow charity in accordance with the Dharma, for in the next life, there is no better friend than charity." This means that possessions such as food and clothing are fleeting because they are not reliable, and they are without essence because one cannot be satisfied. Knowing their nature as it is, in order to take their essence, one should give alms to monks and Brahmins, etc., who are fields of merit, to the poor and sick, etc., who are fields of suffering, and to Dharma speakers and parents, etc., who are friends, that is, fields of benefit. Desiring to make offerings to them and benefit them, one should bestow charity in accordance with the Dharma, that is, with respect. Because such charity will bring great fruit in the future, in the next world, there is no better friend who brings greater benefit than charity. As it is said in the *Entering the Middle Way*: "If a person's foot of morality is broken, even if they are rich through giving, they will fall into the lower realms. Because the principal and interest are completely exhausted, there will be no benefit for them in the future." This means that the fruit of giving without morality is that one enjoys possessions in the basis of the lower realms, and therefore one does not engage in giving to increase future fruits, and therefore it is cut off. If merit and morality increase in the field of virtue, then the fruit
