Commentary on the Letter to a Friend: Clear Meaning Commentary on the Letter to a Friend: Clear Meaning Commentary on the Letter to a Friend: Clear Meaning. Homage. I prostrate to all the Buddhas of the ten directions, together with their sons and disciples. O Sage, holder of the rabbit, whose pure activities possess a thousand white lights! You dispel the heat and suffering of beings scorched by the sun of affliction with a thousand rays of extremely cool light, like the full circle of the autumn moon, or like the valleys of the Malaya Mountains imbued with the fragrance of Hari sandalwood. Even a fraction of a fraction of the cool rays of your qualities, free from attachment, causes the lotus-like eyes, the paired bumblebees, the white teeth with their stamens, and the lotus groves on the faces of the haughty goddesses sent as messengers by Mara, to close. I bow to the Sage, the moon of speech. On the towering mountain of extreme views, a thousand worthy adherents of other schools have been unable to bear even a little of the splendor of your blazing light of view. You dispel the darkness of the three realms with the jewel of confidence in emptiness, free from extremes. May Nagarjuna, king of the nagas, be victorious on the crowns of beings! His sacred words, well-spoken, are a precious treasure. This delightful poem, which advises a cherished friend, I will explain to the best of my ability at the request of some virtuous friends. As it is said in the Lankavatara Sutra: "After my passing, he who will uphold the doctrines, O great wisdom, you should know. In the southern country of Vidarbha, a monk with great fame and fortune, whose name is called Naga, will destroy the extremes of existence and non-existence. In the world, he will mainly teach my doctrine of the unsurpassed vehicle, and having attained the ground of great joy, he will go to the realm of Sukhavati." Thus, the great accomplished master, the noble Nagarjuna, who was prophesied in many sutras, wrote the Letter to a Friend for his close friend, King Good Conduct, in order to show the unerring means of higher rebirth and definite goodness. It should be understood through two summarized meanings: namely, advising to listen and the actual advice. Advising to Listen: First: Qualities, nature, worthy of virtue, I will now speak to you of the Sugata.

These sacred verses, arising from the words of the Sugata, composed for the sake of wishing for merit, are slightly arranged; you are worthy to hear them. Thus it is said. "Virtuous by nature, worthy of virtue"—this is calling out to the king in order to make him listen to the instructions. Because of relying on and becoming accustomed to this, it is virtue, it is goodness. Its nature is the cause, arising from the cause of the root of virtue previously accumulated, now having become a vessel for hearing the sacred Dharma, therefore it is called "worthy of virtue." Therefore, it is connected by saying that you, the king who has previously accumulated roots of virtue and become a vessel for the sacred Dharma, are worthy to hear. What is it? These verses bound by the composition named "Sacred Verses." How much is the quantity? Because the king is busy with affairs and cannot grasp too much content, therefore, in order to avoid the fault of too many words, it is said that it is slightly arranged. By whom? By me, the monk Nagarjuna. Why is it arranged? In order to make you, the lord of the earth, and other sentient beings also wish for the merit of the path of higher realms and definite goodness spoken and taught in the scriptures of the Sugata. The path of higher realms and definite goodness, without being inverted, does not exist outside the teachings of the Buddha. The non-Buddhists think that they can attain the heavens and liberation through animal sacrifices, asceticism such as pulling out hair, and yoga of meditating on the self, etc. Therefore, it is said "wishing for the merit arising from the words spoken by the Sugata," because it is thought that if one wishes for the merit taught by other doctrines, the purpose wished for by the person will not be accomplished. If you think that you will not listen because my poetry does not have beautiful composition, then even if the words are bad, because the meaning is good, it should not be despised, and it is shown with an example: Just as the image of the Sugata, even if it is made of wood, no matter how it is made, the wise will make offerings. Similarly, even if my poetry is bad, because it relies on speaking the sacred Dharma, do not slander it. Thus it is said. Just like the image of the Sugata
