From what is called "formation," due to the condition of birth, arise aging and death, sorrow, lamentation, displeasure, and disturbance. Thus, this sole great mass of suffering will arise. It is said. Similarly, when ignorance ceases, formation ceases. When birth ceases, aging and death, sorrow, lamentation, displeasure, and disturbance cease. Thus, this sole great mass of suffering will cease. Such statements are shown here. Among them, from the ignorance that clings to the aggregates as self and belonging to self, arise meritorious, non-meritorious, and unwavering actions. From that action, consciousness arises, which is the cause of taking birth with karmic imprints. From that consciousness, name and form arise, which are the nature of the five aggregates in the state of nur-nur-po (embryonic stage) and so on. Among them, name is the four aggregates such as feeling. Form is the elements that arise together with it and what is transformed from the elements. From the growth of name and form, the six internal sense bases, such as the eye, arise. From those six sense bases, contact arises, which is the union of object, sense faculty, and consciousness. From contact, feelings of pleasure and pain arise. From the basis of feeling, craving arises, which is the desire to obtain pleasure and the desire to abandon suffering. From craving, grasping arises, which is the intensified craving that engages in accepting and rejecting pleasure and pain. From grasping, existence arises, which is the karmic imprint nourished by it, becoming powerful in taking rebirth. From existence, future birth arises. If there is birth, there is decay of the elements, aging that changes with age, death that changes life, sorrow that torments body and mind, lamentation caused by the lack of food, clothing, and other desires, displeasure, and so on. This extremely great mass of suffering, devoid of self and belonging to self, arises solely. From the cessation of ignorance, the cessation of formation, and so on, from the cessation of birth, the great mass of suffering such as aging and death.

Everything will cease. When are these twelve branches completed? They are completed in three lifetimes, neither more nor less. Thus, ignorance, action, and consciousness are fully completed in the previous life, because they are the cause of rebirth. Name and form up to feeling are completed in the intermediate state, because that is the nature of ripening. Craving, grasping, and existence are also completed in the intermediate state, because they arise from the causes and conditions of those ripenings. Birth and death are completed in the future life, because the end of this life is existence, and birth is accomplished from its causes and conditions. From the causes and conditions of birth, old age and death also arise. Among them, the first two branches do not necessarily arise continuously, because the present name and form may have been projected by ignorance, etc., from hundreds of kalpas ago. If it is the ripening of karma to be experienced after birth, then the first two branches may arise continuously. The last two branches, however, must arise continuously, because the birth and death of the future life arise from the causes and conditions of existence in this life. Therefore, the birth and death of this life are not a single cycle of name and form and dependent origination in this life, because they do not arise from the causes and conditions of craving and grasping in this life. What then? It is a single cycle of name and form and dependent origination in the previous life, because from the causes and conditions of their craving, grasping, and existence, the birth and death of this life arise. Therefore, even though children in this life also have the twelve branches of dependent origination, they are a collection of the branches of dependent origination of the past, future, and present three times. Among them, birth and death are the dependent origination of the past. Ignorance, action, and consciousness are the dependent origination of the future, because they are the cause of projecting some future births. Name and form up to existence are the dependent origination of this life. Thus, the twelve branches that exist in this life can also dispel ignorance about the past and future, namely, between name and form up to feeling, and birth and death.
