Forgetful mindfulness, and the wisdom that thoroughly distinguishes the Dharma, and the diligence that delights in virtue, and the joy that brings ease to the mind in its object, and the pliancy that makes body and mind serviceable, and samadhi, and equanimity that abides naturally without sinking or excitement. These seven are called the limbs of enlightenment because they are the limbs of the path of seeing enlightenment. How is the path of seeing a limb of enlightenment? As it is said in the Ornament of the Sutras: The limb of nature, the limb of place, the third limb of renunciation, the fourth limb of benefit, the three limbs without affliction. As it is said, mindfulness is the limb of the place of the path of seeing enlightenment, because mindfulness abides closely, it prevents virtuous dharmas from deteriorating through the manifestation of the mind. Moreover, just as a precious wheel makes those who have not gone to battle go to battle, it makes the knowable that has not been realized realized. As it is said in the Ornament: For the sake of conquering the unconquered knowable, mindfulness is always practiced. Wisdom is the limb of nature, because the path of seeing enlightenment is the nature of wisdom. Moreover, just as an elephant destroys the attacker, it destroys the conceptualization of clinging to persons and phenomena. As it is said: With this, all the characteristics of the discriminating conceptualization of yoga are destroyed. Diligence is the limb of renunciation, because it enables the practitioner to go as far as he should go. It quickly accomplishes realization, just as a fine horse quickly reaches the end of the ocean at the base of Mount Meru. As it is said: This diligence is complete, it engages for the sake of quick realization. Joy is the limb of benefit, because it calms the mind stream. This is like the splendor of a jewel that makes the king rejoice. As it is said: For the sake of the increase of the light of the Dharma, joy always increases. Pliancy is the limb that prevents turning into affliction, because it destroys the negative karma that is the cause of affliction. This is like a queen enjoying the pleasure of a king. Liberated from all obscurations.

Therefore, it is said: "Through diligent practice, one obtains great bliss." Samadhi is a limb that is never defiled by afflictions; abiding in it is for the sake of transforming one's state. In order to accomplish all desired meanings, like a householder, it is said: "The meaning contemplated in samadhi, wealth will quickly arise." Equanimity is the nature of being free from all afflictions, because it is the nature of a non-afflicted state that is free from greed and displeasure. This is like a minister using the four divisions of an army to abide in the desired place, as it is said: "With equanimity, at all times, one abides as one wishes." Therefore, these are the accumulations of merit, the cause for attaining nirvana, and should be cultivated. Second, calm abiding and insight: In order to show that nirvana is attained through the union of calm abiding and insight, it is said: "Without wisdom, there is no samadhi; without samadhi, there is no wisdom. Whoever possesses both, crosses the ocean of existence like a cow's footprint." This means that without the wisdom that thoroughly knows the individual and general characteristics of all phenomena, samadhi cannot arise, because wisdom can eliminate doubts about the object of knowledge without any hesitation, so that the mind can be placed comfortably and equally on the object of focus. Without samadhi, there is no wisdom that knows things as they truly are, because it is said: "If the mind is placed equally, then one knows things as they truly are." Any yogi who has samadhi, which is one-pointed concentration on the object of focus, and wisdom that knows things as they truly are, can cross the ocean of existence like the water in a cow's footprint, that is, he can quickly dry it up or cross over it. Wisdom here refers to the realization of the selflessness of persons and phenomena, because otherwise one cannot cut the root of existence. Wisdom without samadhi cannot uproot afflictions because it is unstable, and without wisdom, samadhi only suppresses the manifestation of afflictions, but cannot uproot the seeds. Therefore,
