If those two hundred and fifty-three are the higher discipline, they will be included in these three. Therefore, one should strive to learn these three. Fifth, to guard the mindfulness of the body as a cause for that: 'O powerful one, the mindfulness of the body is taught by the Sugata as the one and only path. One should diligently guard it, for the loss of mindfulness destroys all dharmas.' Thus it is said, 'O powerful one,' calling out to the king, observing all states of the body, such as standing and sitting, is mindfulness of the body. That is the one path of the Sugata, the path to be easily attained. The sutra says: 'Monks, to purify sentient beings, to completely liberate them from suffering and unpleasantness, to realize the Dharma, and to directly realize Nirvana, the path is like this: it is mindfulness of the body.' Therefore, because it is very necessary, one should strive to guard the mindfulness of the body. If that mindfulness disappears, then all other virtuous dharmas will also be destroyed, let alone the methods for attaining Nirvana? Third, to make the obtained basis meaningful, there are three. First, thinking that the body is impermanent and without essence, thereby not being attached: 'Life is full of harm, like being struck by the wind, more impermanent than a water bubble. What opportunity is there to be idle, from inhaling to exhaling, from sleeping to waking? It is truly rare.' Thus it is said, 'The three realms are impermanent like autumn clouds, the birth and death of beings are like watching a play, the life of a man passes like lightning in the sky, flowing swiftly like water down a steep slope.' As it is said, the life of a man is associated with many harms, such as the disturbance of external humans and non-humans, and internal element disorders, and is even more impermanent than a water bubble blown by the wind. From inhaling to exhaling, from falling asleep to waking up, the opportunity to be idle, that is, the opportunity to exist again without dying, is very rare.

It's just a coincidence. Therefore, to show that life is impermanent and that there is no essence in the body to be attached to, (the scripture says:) "The body will eventually turn to ashes, eventually dry up, eventually rot, and eventually become impure, with no essence. It will be completely destroyed, decayed, and decomposed. Please recognize that it has the nature of separation." Thus it is said. Just as the Blessed One said, "Monks, after the body of the deceased has passed away, relatives will burn it with fire, or throw it into the water, or bury it underground, or it will be dried by the wind and the sun, or it will be eaten by various creatures belonging to the animal realm." In this regard, burning with fire turns to ashes, the wind and the sun make it eventually dry, throwing it into the water makes it eventually rot, and being eaten by creatures eventually becomes impure. Therefore, this body has no essence, it is completely destroyed by fire, decayed by wind and sun, corroded and soaked by water, and torn to pieces by creatures. Please recognize that it has the nature of separation. If even stable things are destined to be destroyed in the end, then what is there to say about the body? To show this, (the scripture says:) "The earth, Mount Sumeru, the ocean, the seven suns, these tangible things burned by burning, not even ashes will remain, let alone the extremely fragile human body, not to mention it." Thus it is said. Any solid things, such as the earth's circle, Mount Sumeru and the seven golden mountains, and the outer and inner oceans, when the world is destroyed by fire, this sun will burn plants and forests. The second sun will dry up the streams. The third sun will dry up the four great rivers that have not been soaked in seawater. The fourth and fifth suns will dry the ocean into water droplets. The sixth sun will dry up all the water droplets, causing the earth and Mount Sumeru to smoke. When the seventh sun appears, it will turn into a fireball, leaving no ashes behind. As it is said, seven suns rise, burning into a fireball, and the tangible things burned by the power of burning, not even ashes will remain, let alone the extremely fragile human body, not to mention it, because this is impermanence.
