With meditation, strive in the four noble truths. Thus it is said. Liberation is nothing other than the mind being freed from the bonds of afflictions. This depends on oneself becoming familiar with the means of liberation, so others cannot assist in this, therefore one should strive oneself. What are the means of liberation? As it is said: One who abides in discipline, possesses learning and thought, should diligently apply oneself to meditation. As it is said, first, abiding in the discipline of any of the seven types of individual liberation vows, which are encompassed by the mind of definite arising, and then properly engaging in listening and contemplating the scriptures that accord with the truth. With meditation that focuses single-pointedly on the meaning of what has been heard, focusing on the four noble truths such as suffering, diligently meditate on their conventional truth, which includes the sixteen aspects such as impermanence, and the ultimate truth, which is emptiness free from all extremes of elaboration. This shows that the three trainings themselves are the means of liberation. To show that all trainings are included within them, it is said: Higher discipline, higher wisdom, constantly train in higher mind, one hundred and fifty-one trainings, these are completely included in the three. Thus it is said, one should constantly train in higher discipline, which is the nature of the seven abandonments completely dedicated to Nirvana, higher mind, which is the nature of meditation that is the basis conforming with the arising of the noble path and things, and higher wisdom, which realizes the two types of selflessness. Because these three trainings are the complete and non-inverted means of attaining liberation. Thus, discipline ripens the immature continuum, meditation suppresses afflictions, and wisdom liberates the ripened by uprooting afflictions. These are also the collection of all trainings, for example, the four root downfalls mentioned in individual liberation, the thirteen remainders, the thirty expiations, the ninety solitary falls, the four confessions, the one hundred and twelve misdeeds, totaling one hundred and fifty-one trainings.
