Regarding the view of "I," it is said in the sutras that there are "twenty views of the perishable aggregate," and their antidote is saying "form is not self," and so on. Now, in order to explain that the aggregates arise from conforming causes and conditions, by abandoning causelessness and incompatible causes, it is said: The aggregates are not from arbitrary power, nor from time, nor from nature, nor from inherent substance, nor from Ishvara, nor causeless; but arise from ignorance, consciousness, karma, and craving. Thus it is said in the Treasury of Knowledge. That is to say, the aggregates such as form are not independent of others, nor do they arise arbitrarily. Because it can be observed that they change according to the presence or absence of their respective specific causes and conditions. Some say, "Time ripens things, time gathers beings, time awakens people from sleep, time is difficult to overcome." They believe that all things arise from a constant time, but this is also incorrect. Because apart from things such as form, the so-called time cannot be found. Moreover, if all things arise from a constant time, then they should arise and cease simultaneously. The Samkhya school believes that all things arise from a constant nature (Prakriti) in which the three qualities of sattva (purity), rajas (passion), and tamas (darkness) are in equilibrium, but this is also incorrect. If nature and its modifications are the same, then nature would also be impermanent like its modifications. If nature and its modifications are different, then the view that everything is based on nature is contradictory. Things also do not arise from their own essence, because this would imply that they do not depend on causes and conditions. Moreover, nature should not depend on other things. Furthermore, some logicians and others say: "Subtle and inconceivable, extremely refined, all-knowing, all-doing. The object of meditation for meditators who have attained wisdom through the practice of yoga. The bodies of the sun, moon, earth, water, fire, wind, directions, and space. Those who wish to attain peace, bliss, and joy should constantly meditate on Ishvara." They say that the eternal Ishvara with such qualities creates all things, but this is also incorrect. Because a constant thing produces results without depending on other things, then everything should arise simultaneously. If it arises gradually depending on the will of Ishvara, then the will arises from a cause different from Ishvara, therefore, all Ishvara

If it were created by a powerful being, it would also arise simultaneously; if it depended on other desires, it would fall into an endless state. Therefore, it is not born from inconsistent causes, nor is it born from no cause, because that would lead to being either always existent or never existent. So, from what does it arise? For example, just as a flawless seed covered with soil and fertilizer, moistened with water, will manifest a sprout; similarly, powerful karma covered by ignorance, moistened by craving, will manifest the sprout of rebirth. Therefore, the treasury of knowledge says: 'Ignorance, karma, and craving are the sources of birth.' Third, abandoning the three combinations of adverse conditions: Those who wish to be liberated from samsara must abandon the causes of birth as described above. So, how should they be abandoned? It is said: 'Holding vows and asceticism as supreme, having inverted views of oneself, and being doubtful; these three are the gates that block the city of liberation, know this well.' That is to say, holding vows and asceticism that follow wrong views as pure and liberating is holding vows and asceticism as supreme; having inverted views of oneself, that is, of the five aggregates of appropriation, as self and belonging to self, is the view of the aggregates of destruction; and having doubts about liberation and the path to liberation is doubt. These three combine together. For example, just as not wanting to go, relying on the wrong path, and doubting the correct path are obstacles to reaching the desired destination; similarly, due to clinging to the view of the aggregates of destruction, one does not want to attain liberation from selflessness; due to holding vows and asceticism as supreme, one relies on the wrong path to liberation; and due to doubt, one doubts the correct path. Know that these three are the gates that block the city of liberation, and abandon them. Fourth, cultivating the three trainings of favorable conditions: So, what can help to be liberated from such obstacles? Because in this, others can do nothing to help, it depends entirely on one's own mind, so to show this, it is said: 'Liberation depends on oneself, in this others are of no help, hearing and discipline.'
