Because food and action are the same, like saying "two-one." The first two (lethargy and sleep) arise from causes such as the conceptual thoughts of relatives, are in accordance with the Dharma that makes the mind wander, and are destroyed by tranquility, so they are placed together. The latter two (agitation and regret) also arise from causes such as not moderating food, make the mind depressed, and are destroyed by the perception of light, so they are placed together. Why are there specifically five obscurations? Because they harm the three trainings, just as desire and hatred harm higher ethical discipline. According to their order, due to craving for desire, one will not correctly take vows at first, and after taking them, when others encourage learning, one will not practice according to the Dharma because of extreme distress. Lethargy and sleep harm higher mind training, because when meditating on the cause of tranquility, they make the mind depressed inwardly. Agitation and regret harm higher wisdom training, because when meditating on the cause of higher insight, they make the mind wander outwardly. Doubt harms both, because when meditating on the cause of equanimity in the union of tranquility and insight, if one cannot be certain due to doubt, one cannot abide in equanimity. Second, there are three aspects to particularly practicing the Dharma of definite goodness. First, meditating on the five faculties and five powers of the path of accumulation: Thus, after showing the Dharma of obstacles to be abandoned, in order to show the Dharma to be relied upon that is in accordance with liberation, (it is) said: "Faith and diligence, and mindfulness, Samadhi and wisdom, the five supreme Dharmas, To these, strive to cultivate diligently, These are called powers and faculties, And are also those who have reached the peak." This means faith that completely believes in the truths, diligence that rejoices in realizing these truths, mindfulness that does not forget the truths and their aspects, samadhi that focuses the mind one-pointedly on the aspects of the truths, and wisdom that correctly distinguishes the aspects of the truths. Therefore, diligently cultivate and familiarize yourself with these five, and these are the actual causes of the noble path.

In the time of patience, it is called "Supreme Dharma." Because in those times of patience, one is not overwhelmed by opposing factors, it is called "Strength." In the time of warmth, because it especially controls the manifestation of truth, it is called "Faculty." When it increases, because the root of virtue becomes the peak of movement, it is also called "Becoming the Peak." Second, abandoning the obstacle to it, pride, is: "Old age, sickness, death, suffering, separation, and likewise, Action is mine, not surpassing what is done. Thinking thus again and again, Through the door of its antidote, pride will not arise." As it is said, I will not surpass becoming old, sick, dying, and suffering, and likewise, I will not surpass action, happiness and suffering depend on the actions I have done before, I have no autonomy. One should contemplate properly, thinking in this way again and again is the antidote to pride, pride will not arise, so think. Third, cultivating the conducive condition, the correct view, is divided into two parts, the first part is a brief explanation: Because the cause of arising faculties such as faith is the correct view, in order to explain cultivating it: "If you wish to realize the excellent high realms and liberation, You should diligently cultivate the path of correct view. Even if one practices virtue with a wrong view, All the ripening will possess inexhaustibility." As it is said, here there are two kinds of correct views: the object of the conventional and the object of the ultimate. The first is to have faith in the relationship between action and result in the future. The second is the wisdom that realizes the suchness of all phenomena, emptiness. The first correct view is the cause of high realms, and the second is the cause of liberation. Therefore, if you want temporary high realms and the ultimate happiness of liberation, you should always cultivate the correct view of the conventional and ultimate objects mentioned above. What will happen if you don't cultivate it? If a person does not have the correct view of the conventional object, with the wrong view of denying the cause and effect of actions, even if he has previously performed good deeds such as giving alms well, all the actions in his own continuum, their ripening will be inexhaustible and rough.
