is much greater than the difference. Therefore, you should strive to abandon great non-virtue and practice great virtue. If you practice much non-virtue and little virtue, you will not be afraid. If you practice the opposite, you will not be very afraid either. Because it is taught: A few grains of salt can change a little water, but not the Ganges River. Likewise, even a small deed of sin, if the root of virtue is vast, it will not affect it. It is said. Just as a few grains of salt can change the taste of a little water, but cannot change the Ganges River or a very large amount of water. Similarly, even a small deed of sin can produce results if the root of virtue is small and little, but it cannot produce results if it is vast, that is, large and abundant. Know this and strive to accomplish great and powerful virtue. Sixth, abandoning the five obscurations: To teach that these five things, such as agitation, are obstacles to meditation and liberation, etc., so strive to abandon them. Agitation and regret and malice, drowsiness and sleep and, desire and longing and doubt, these five obscurations are, robbers who steal the wealth of virtue, know this! It is said. Agitation, in which the mind wanders to a beautiful object, regret, in which one regrets evil deeds, malice, in which the mind is disturbed from within by objects of torment, drowsiness, which makes the body and mind unusable by shrinking inward, sleep, which relies on the cause of sleep and involuntarily draws inward, desire for food and sex, etc., and doubt, in which the mind is in two minds about liberation and the path to liberation. These are meditation and liberation, etc., or the obstacles to the three trainings, so they are called the five obscurations. These are robbers who steal the wealth of virtue, know this and abandon them. Among them, agitation and regret are similar in being unsteady, and drowsiness and sleep are similar in being dull, so they are each listed as one obscuration. Or, if you want to accumulate, then the obscurations are incompatible.
