It is the state of wishing to be free from suffering, etc. The second is that, through realizing the absence of self of a person, one regards the aggregates merely as dharmas, and wishes sentient beings to be free from suffering. The third is that, through realizing the absence of self of phenomena, one wishes illusory sentient beings to be free from suffering, etc. The first is for ordinary people. The second is for the noble Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. The third is possessed by the noble Mahayanists. Just as Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas realize the absence of self of phenomena, the latter two are possessed by all the noble ones of the three vehicles, existing as the same entity with different focuses. The method of cultivation is: the first three are divided into three Equanimity is: first cultivate towards ordinary people, and finally cultivate until one treats all beings, both lovable and unlovable, equally. If one cultivates in this way, what will be the result? By cultivating loving-kindness, etc., with the wisdom of knowing the two kinds of selflessness, one will attain Nirvana. If one cannot do as above, even without attaining Nirvana, one can attain the bliss beyond desire in the realm of form, such as the Brahma world, the first Dhyana, etc. Because by cultivating these, one can experience the faultless and peaceful Samadhi, free from the suffering of anger, etc. Therefore, loving-kindness, etc., are taught in this treatise as the means of generating Samadhi. Fourth, cultivating the four Dhyanas: by cultivating loving-kindness, etc., one can attain the four Dhyanas, so what are the results of these? "By the four Dhyanas that completely abandon desire, joy, pleasure, and suffering, one can share the merit with the gods of Brahma, Clear Light, Universal Goodness, and Great Fruit." As it is said, by counteracting desire with investigation and analysis, that is, craving for desire, and...

I, with the joy and happiness born from being apart from desires, having a one-pointed mind with joy and happiness, is the first dhyana, abandoning investigation with the antidote of pure faith. With the joy and happiness born from samadhi, having a one-pointed mind with joy and happiness, is the second dhyana. With mindfulness and clear comprehension, and equanimity as the antidote, abandoning joy, having a one-pointed mind with happiness, is the third dhyana. With mindfulness and completely pure equanimity as the antidote, completely abandoning happiness and suffering, having a one-pointed mind with neutral sensation, is the fourth dhyana. Thus, by meditating on the four samadhi dhyanas as causes, one can attain birth equal to the gods of Great Brahma, Clear Light, Extensive Virtue, and Great Fruit in order. This is speaking of the main points. In detail, by meditating on the small, medium, and large of the first dhyana, one can be reborn in the Brahma Assembly, Brahma Retinue, and Great Brahma in order. By meditating on the small, medium, and large of the fourth dhyana, one can be reborn in Limited Virtue, Immeasurable Virtue, and Extensive Virtue, etc., one should know these. Fifth, how to adopt or reject virtue and non-virtue based on the distinction of heavy and light deeds: "Constant, with manifest attachment, and without antidote, Deeds arising from a basis possessing principal qualities, Virtue and non-virtue, these five are great, Therefore, strive diligently to practice virtue." Thus it is said, whichever virtuous or non-virtuous deed possesses five distinctions, is called great because it produces definite and many results. What are those distinctions? They are the distinctions of application, intention, antidote, and basis. Among these, the distinction of application is doing that deed constantly. The distinction of intention is doing it with manifest attachment such as afflictions and great faith. The distinction of antidote is that the deed has no antidote that can destroy it. The distinction of basis is twofold: the basis of benefiting is parents and dharma speakers, and especially benefiting like the Jataka tales of bears and monkeys. The basis possessing principal qualities is the Three Jewels and arising from cessation, etc. The benefit and harm done to these arises from the basis.
