O! What is the ultimate truth here? How does one properly contemplate its object and meditate on it? The suchness of the reality of all phenomena is called the ultimate truth. And what is that like? In the Root Verses on the Middle Way, it says: "Not known from others, peaceful, Not elaborated by elaborations, Without conceptualization, meaning without difference, That is the characteristic of suchness." As it is said, it is not something to be known by sound and conceptualization in a general way, nor is it something to be realized by being shown by others, but rather something to be realized by yogis in an inexpressible state through their own self-aware wisdom. That is to say, one should not seek it elsewhere than in the nature of these phenomena such as form, etc., which arise dependently, because by realizing an ultimate truth dharma other than dependent arising, no one is liberated, and by not realizing it, no one is bound. It is like the "self" and "chief" etc. of the outsiders. If one does not realize the nature of these phenomena such as form, etc., which arise dependently, as they are, then children are bound, because they cling to external and internal forms, etc., as real, and by grasping onto the self of the person and the self of phenomena, children give rise to all the afflictions and conceptualizations that bind them. As it is said in the Garland of Jewels: "As long as there is clinging to the aggregates, So long there is clinging to self. From clinging to self, there is also karma, From karma, there is also rebirth in samsara." As it is said. By realizing the phenomena of dependent arising such as form, etc., in the way of emptiness that cannot be expressed as described above, one will abandon all afflictions and conceptualizations and attain liberation. Again, in that very text it says: "Since it is not obtained in either oneself or others, And in the three times, Therefore, clinging to self will cease, From that, karma and birth also [cease]." As it is said. The suchness of all phenomena as described above is also called selflessness. Apart from realizing it, there is no way to attain liberation, and if one realizes it, then all clinging to extremes will be destroyed, so the Middle Way is also it. Other than the Buddha, the Lord and Vishnu etc. do not have the ability to show it. It is also said that, in the Four Hundred

There is no second gate of peace, all wrong views are destroyed, and it becomes the realm of the Buddhas, which is called selflessness. Thus it is said. Therefore, the method of realizing emptiness is to truly understand that these conventional dharmas such as form arise dependently and are merely the nature of causes and conditions. Otherwise, one will fall into either extreme of permanence or annihilation. As it is also said in the sutra: "That which is born from conditions is unborn; in it there is no nature of birth. That which depends on conditions is said to be empty. Whoever knows emptiness is diligent." Thus it is. This dependent arising should also be understood through the negation of the four extremes of arising. The teacher says in the "Praise to the Middle Way": "Suffering is made by oneself, made by others, made by both, or imputed by materialists without cause; you say it arises dependently." Thus it is said. It is also said: "A sprout does not arise from a seed that is destroyed or not destroyed; you say that all phenomena are like the appearance of an illusion." Thus it is said. Among them, things do not arise from themselves, because it is contradictory for oneself to act on oneself, and birth is meaningless, and one would fall into the fault of having no limit. Nor is it from otherness, because all things would arise from all things, and even incompatible things would become cause and effect. Nor is it from both, because both faults would arise and it is contradictory. Nor is it from no cause, because it would become permanent or non-existent, and it would be meaningless to strive for the cause for the sake of the effect. Therefore, things are free from the four extremes of arising, and arise depending on the cause and conditions that are merely conditions. And this is the antidote to all views of clinging to extremes, which is called dependent arising, the Middle Way. As it is said in the "Root Verses on the Middle Way": "Whatever arises dependently, I say is emptiness; it is also called designation; it is also the meaning of the Middle Way." Thus it is said. There is no other view superior to understanding dependent arising, but because this is very difficult to understand, the Madhyamaka school
