Fifth, to abide in patience: Because householders have a lot of anger due to the many undesirable things that come upon them. In order to reverse this and show the virtues of patience, it is said: Since there is no asceticism equal to patience, you should not open the door of anger. By abandoning anger, one obtains the state of non-retrogression. The Buddha has declared this to be true. As it is said, patience is here not being angry at harm, and even if anger arises, it is not maintained. Since there is no other asceticism equal to that, it alone is the supreme of asceticism. Entering fire and water, eating roots and fruits, wearing bark and leaves, etc., are only the suffering of the body. If one does not even attain higher realms from those, what need is there to mention liberation? Therefore, those are not asceticism. Because patience has such great benefits, therefore, you should not open even a little the door of anger, which is contrary to that supreme of asceticism. Because by abandoning anger through cultivating patience, one obtains the state of non-retrogression in the desire realm, the Buddha has declared. As it is said in the sutra: Monks, like this, abandon anger! You have become the pillar of non-retrogression. As it is said. Anger and desire for desire are the causes of the desire realm. Even without abandoning desire for desire, one cannot abandon anger. Therefore, it is said that abandoning anger transcends desire. Thus, having taught not to open the door of anger from the very beginning, even if anger arises, it should be pacified immediately, and one should not bear a grudge. Therefore, it is said: He abused me, he struck me, he defeated me, he robbed me of my wealth. Holding a grudge creates quarrels, and abandoning grudges leads to peaceful sleep. As it is said, why should one not open the door of anger? Therefore, I was abused by this person with bad words. This person struck me with a stick, etc. This person defeated me with power. This person robbed me of my wealth, thus holding on tightly to the signs of harm. Holding a grudge leads to quarrels that result in misdeeds of body and speech.

Anger arises and causes suffering, therefore, by completely abandoning such hatred, there will be no suffering in the mind. Because one can sleep peacefully, one should strive to abandon hatred. It is also said in the Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra: "In short, there is no happiness with anger, this is absolutely not the case." And "Whoever strives to subdue anger, will be happy in this life and the next." As it is said. Sixth, abandon the inferior actions of the three doors of body, speech, and mind, and exhort to study virtuous conduct. For ordinary people, as mentioned before, good and bad minds arise mixed together, therefore, good minds should be stable, and bad minds should be unstable. To teach this, (the text says): "The mind is like water, earth, and stone, paintings are different, afflictions are best at first, seeking Dharma is best in the end." It is said. In the category of sentient beings, the activity of the mind has differences of instability and stability, just like drawing on water, drawing on earth, and drawing on stone, one should recognize these three situations. Among them, for the afflicted mind, the initial instability like drawing on water is the best. For seeking Dharma, that is, good minds, the final stability like drawing on stone is the best, so one should practice like that. Just as sentient beings' minds are of three types, so are speech also of three types, therefore, for these, one should adopt or abandon according to the situation. To teach this, (the text says): "The Victorious One spoke of three kinds of words: pleasing and truthful, and those of false speech, like honey, flowers, and impurity, abandon the last of these." It is said. The Victorious One, who has destroyed sinful dharmas, proclaimed the three kinds of speech of people. Connect it like this. What are the three? Those that are pleasing and agreeable, truthful, and false. Among them, the first is pleasing, so it is like honey; the second is beautiful and worthy of praise, so it is like a flower; the third is like an impure thing because it should be blamed. Therefore, one should abandon the last one and rely on the first two. The conduct of sentient beings who dwell in samsara
