dependence. Conventional truth and ultimate truth. Thus it is said. This has two types of meanings: general meaning and branch meaning. First, there are two aspects: determining the essence and establishing the individual characteristics. First, in the Madhyamakavatara, because of the two ways that beings see phenomena, either as true or false, Buddhas and noble ones accept the two truths. By seeing all things as completely false, one grasps the two essences of things and objects. Whatever is seen as truly existent is the ultimate truth, and whatever is seen as false is considered the conventional truth. As it is explained. There is no division into two truths from the perspective of the essence of these things. These things are established as two truths from the perspective of how ordinary people think with their minds and how noble ones perceive with their wisdom. Among them, for these external and internal things, the conceptualizations of children that follow the terms that have been entered since beginningless time are self-satisfied and attached to phenomena, and all the terms that are established in the world, such as knowable, knower, expressible, expression, pillar, vase, man, woman, etc., are called worldly conventional truth. These are the eye medicine of emptiness of self-nature, the wisdom of the noble ones who have purified the dimness of ignorance, seeing in a way that does not see anything, not abiding in any extreme such as existence or non-existence, the suchness that is free from all elaborations is called the ultimate truth. The first of the second is to establish the nature of conventional truth. What is the world? What is convention? Why is it called truth? To that, the world is famously known as aggregates, and the world definitely depends on it. As it is said, therefore, the person who is imputed in dependence on the aggregates is called the world. Because it completely obscures, it is conventional, because it obscures seeing suchness, therefore, the ignorance of the nature of afflictions that manifests attachment to things is called conventional. Because the conventional clings to truth and establishes terms, it is called conventional truth, but not because it exists in meaning and is not deceptive.

Because the noble ones do not see it that way. As it is said, in the Entering the Middle Way: 'Because ignorance obscures its own nature, it is called conventional truth.' That which is destroyed by it, appearing as true, is said by the Sage to be the conventional truth. Things that are artificial are conventional. As it is explained. The teacher Lekdenjye said: Conventional is the term of the world, and what is established by it is considered the conventional truth, and the recognition of the essence is the same as before. What is the object to which the name of conventional truth is applied? As it is said in the Entering the Middle Way: 'Whatever is perceived by the six unimpaired senses, which is understood by the world, is considered true only in the world, and the rest is considered false in the world.' As it is explained. The appearance of consciousness, such as form, etc., which arises from the six senses without being corrupted by internal and external causes of error, is considered conventional truth because children cling to it as true and speak of it. The appearance of consciousness arising from being corrupted by causes of error, the appearance of illusion and dreams, and the hair of those with cataracts, etc., are merely conventional and not true because worldly people do not speak of them as true. Those objects of consciousness that are not corrupted are merely conventional and not true for the noble ones, because they understand them to be like illusions and do not cling to them as true. Therefore, conventional truth is established only in relation to individual ordinary people, and the noble ones do not have conventional truth, it should be understood. Then, why did the Tathagata establish conventional truth as it is known in the world? That is as it is said: 'Just as a barbarian's foreign language cannot be understood, so too, apart from worldly people, the world cannot be understood.' As it is said, in order to lead the world into that very suchness, he made arrangements by acknowledging it in the presence of the world as it is known in the world, but he did not teach it by seeing the conventional himself, because the Tathagata who abides in the Dharmakaya as long as samsara exists

Because the Tathagatas have not seen any dharma. Therefore, it is said extensively in the scriptures of the Eastern School: If the guides of the world do not conform to the world, then what is the nature of the Buddha, and no one will know the Buddha. Etc. Those with afflictions are those who have afflictions, such as pride in self, ignorance of self, attachment to self, and so on. For the noble learners who have not abandoned ignorance, in the post-attainment state, it is like mistaking a picture drawn by the painter himself for a demon. Sometimes, there may be a slight appearance of clinging to things as real, but it quickly disappears like drawing on water. For the noble Arhats who have abandoned all afflictions of ignorance, and for the Bodhisattvas who abide on the irreversible ground, the appearance of clinging to things as real does not arise in any way. When using conventional terms, they make designations according to how things are known in the world, which is for the purpose of guiding others, and this should be understood. Here, the teacher Yeshe Nyingpo says: These appearances alone are called conventional, and what is known that is commonly seen and known from the wise to the children is considered the conventional truth. Why is it called the conventional truth? Because: Whoever or whatever, truly obscures, that is conventional. Therefore, this is all truth, but not truth in the ultimate sense. This means that whatever mind or whatever is in the mind that obscures the truth, the mind and mental factors that are grasped by untrue conceptual thoughts are conventional. Because it establishes all of this as truth, it is called the conventional truth. Conventional truth is also of two types: true conventional truth and untrue conventional truth. The first is: free from the superimposition of conceptual thoughts on true arising and ceasing, etc., arising dependent on causes and conditions, and not deceiving in acting as it appears. The second is: superimposed by conceptual thoughts as true arising and ceasing, etc., having the characteristic of the general object of sound. As it is said: Separated from the meaning of what is interpreted, merely dependent on things.
