If so, if one observes that things exist from their own nature, if that is the case, then things, as you say, are without cause and condition. If one observes that outer and inner things exist by their own nature, then, since self-nature does not depend on cause and condition, things, as you say, are without cause and condition. Even if one admits no cause, it harms the result and the cause itself, the agent and the action and the deed, arising and ceasing, and also the result. If a pot exists by its own nature without depending on cause and condition, then its cause, such as clay, and the agent, such as the potter, and the action, such as the wheel, and the actions of making the pot, etc., will disappear. Since they disappear, arising and ceasing will also disappear. Therefore, how could the result, the pot itself, exist? Therefore, it harms all results, etc. Therefore, if one admits that things have self-nature, then everything is untenable. The second point is: For us who speak of emptiness, all this is tenable. Like this: Whatever is dependently arisen, that is said to be emptiness. That is dependently designated, that itself is the Middle Way. According to our view, sprouts and consciousness, etc., outer and inner things that depend on cause and condition, whatever is dependently arisen is without self-nature. Whatever is without self-nature, the Bhagavan declared to be emptiness. As it is said in the sutra: Whatever is born from conditions is unborn. There is no self-nature of birth in it. Whatever depends on conditions is said to be empty. Whoever knows emptiness is mindful. Therefore, emptiness, like a chariot being designated as a chariot depending on the parts of the chariot such as the wheels, is designated as depending on cause and condition. Whatever is dependently designated is without self-nature, and whatever is without self-nature is emptiness. That emptiness, which is characterized by being without self-nature, is designated as the Middle Way because it is free from the two extremes of existence and non-existence. In that

Therefore, emptiness, dependent designation, and the Middle Way are all names for dependent arising itself. Because whatever is dependently arisen is emptiness. Because if there were any phenomena that were not dependently arisen, there would be phenomena that were not empty. As it is said in the *Shataka*: "Whatever, wherever, at any time, does not exist dependently, does not exist at all. Therefore, at any time, in any place, there is nothing permanent." And in the sutra it says: "The wise understand the phenomena of dependent arising, and ultimately do not rely on extreme views. Knowing phenomena with causes and conditions, there are no phenomena without causes and conditions." As it is said, because there are no phenomena that are not dependently arisen, and dependent arising is also emptiness, therefore there are no phenomena that are not empty. Because, as we see it, dependent arising is emptiness, therefore it does not become a fault as others say. Secondly, regarding the invalidity of transcendental conventions, there are two parts: the impossibility of the Three Jewels as refuge, and the impossibility of objects of acceptance and rejection, Dharma and non-Dharma. Here, we will discuss the first. There are three parts: the impossibility of the Sangha, the Dharma, and the Buddha. Here, we will discuss the first. There are two parts: a summary and an explanation. First, the summary: "If all this is not empty, there is no arising and no ceasing." According to you, who say that things have inherent existence, if all these things are not empty, then because inherent existence does not change, there is no arising and no ceasing. And when there is no arising and no ceasing, then certainly, "The four noble truths, for you, do not exist and become an error." This is the explanation, which has three parts: the impossibility of the four truths as objects, the impossibility of the realization of the fruits of the four truths, and the impossibility of the fruit of realization, the state of stream-enterer. Here, we will discuss the first: Why, if there is no arising and ceasing, are the four noble truths impossible? "If there is no dependent arising, how can there be suffering?" The impermanence and suffering that are taught do not exist in inherent existence. Whatever has inherent existence
