It is not dependent arising, and if it is not dependent arising, how can there be suffering? What is not dependent arising is not impermanent, and suffering is also impermanent, and whatever is impermanent is suffering, as the Blessed One said. It is also said in the Hundred Treatises: 'Impermanence is certainly harmful, and whatever is harmful is not happiness. Therefore, whatever is impermanent, all of that becomes suffering.' The suffering of such an impermanent nature is not present in those who say that things have inherent existence, because for those who say that things have inherent existence, not only can there not be suffering, but there can also be no origin, because from inherent existence, from where does it arise? Therefore, for those who harm emptiness, there is no origin. From this, suffering arises, and the cause of suffering is called origin. If suffering exists by its own nature, then, because birth is meaningless, from where does it arise? Understanding its cause is meaningless. Therefore, for you who harm emptiness, there is no origin. For those who accept that suffering has inherent existence, cessation is also impossible. If suffering exists by its own nature, there is no cessation. Because inherent existence is permanent, it is harmful to cessation. If suffering exists by its own nature, because inherent existence does not change, there is no cessation of suffering. Thus, because inherent existence is permanent, grasping inherent existence and causing it to return is also harmful to the cessation of suffering. Similarly, for those who say that things have inherent existence, the noble path is also unreasonable. If the path has inherent existence, cultivation is not reasonable. If the path is to be cultivated, your inherent existence does not exist. If things have inherent existence, then at that time the path has inherent existence, and even if it is not cultivated, it exists, so cultivating the path is not reasonable. If you admit that the path is to be cultivated, then your noble path has no inherent existence, because it is something that is done.

Furthermore, when the origin of suffering and its cessation do not exist, how can one desire to attain the cessation of suffering through the path? If one cultivates the path in order to attain the cessation of suffering and to abandon its origin, then for those who assert that things possess inherent existence, when the origin of suffering and its cessation do not exist in the manner previously explained, how can one desire to attain the cessation of suffering through the path? Therefore, the noble path is also unreasonable. Secondly, for those who assert that things possess inherent existence, the complete understanding of suffering and so forth also does not exist, as follows: If by its very nature, it is not completely understood, then how can it become completely understood? Is not its nature abiding? If the nature of suffering was such that it was not completely understood by its very nature, then how could it possibly become completely understood later? It is unreasonable. Why? Is not its nature abiding? That is, whatever its nature is, like the heat of fire, it truly exists in the world. Therefore, the complete understanding of suffering is impossible. Similarly, for you, abandonment and manifestation, as well as cultivation (and the four fruits), are also unreasonable like complete understanding, so connect it. Just as the complete understanding of suffering is impossible, so too, in your view as one who asserts that things possess inherent existence, the abandonment of the origin, the manifestation of cessation, and the cultivation of the path are also unreasonable, as follows: The origin is not a nature that is obstructed by its very nature, so later abandonment is also unreasonable, because nature is irreversible. Apply this also to manifestation and cultivation. Thirdly, for those who assert that things possess inherent existence, not only are complete understanding and so forth unreasonable, but the four fruits are also unreasonable like complete understanding. Just as suffering cannot be completely understood because it is not completely understood by its very nature, so too, the four fruits, such as stream-enterer and so forth, if they did not exist by their very nature before, then it is also unreasonable for them to exist later. Not only are the four fruits unreasonable, but attaining them is also unreasonable, as follows: Inherent existence
